Well folks as the Sorce once said,

take what you can from this, since it is coming from the Tropics.

Just sharing.

Thus far, trees have been returned to LUSH and will be rested for about 5
years. The cuttings will take some experimenting tests, but that is just more
tests.

For us --------

[ a ] Soil mix, 5 mm gravel 90 % by volume and 10 % aged compost by volume

[ b ] pots for just holding the trees -------- earthenware, it's porous and evaporation
will cool the soil. Also very hard to over water, especially since the pot functions as
a wick. [ concrete for the more mature ]

[ c ] Still have to figure out the fertiliser programme, and the number of cakes to
use . will probably just mimic what is seen in Japanese images [ Bonsai Today ]

[ d ] Shall begin the ground growing experiments. See how it all explodes.
Now that we have selected trees to work from and their cuttings.
Looking at 3 inch trunks, plus nice shapes.

[ e ] Even if we discover how to shorten the needles on command, unless it is
natural, like exposure to the sun / wind. No go on stress techniques.
We have no exhibitions to take them too, plus theft is a real fear.

[ f ] Soon it will be 30 years from seed.
On this island as far as I know, the only place where J.B pines grow.
Frightening.

Hmm who would have though back in the 80's when Mr. Y. Danbara sent a pack
of J.B.pine seeds, he would have opened the way for us and J.B.pines in the tropics.
Toodles.

Oh forgot this -

Our sunlight is so much more intense, we can use it with fertiliser to create, more leaves
on a tree, which will naturally come out smaller.
[ paint tested in Florida and Arizona fails down here ]
I imagine it's the same UV effect that occurs on very high mountains.

Also found out that the UV effect can occur at around 3.000 ft, as it is noticed on our
sugar loaf peaks.
Ciao, Ciao.

Interesting thread, Anthony. Could you, please, share some pictures of your 30 years old JBPs for inspiration what can be achieved in that time from seed? And if you've got some good results and experiences with their air layering or propagation by cuttings, it would be good place to share them. I've checked ausbonsai and info is a little bit mean or limited to few posts over there. Getting ready to remove sbs in few seasons, so I hope there's a way not to throw away all green mass grown, thank you.

@petegreg and @Paradox ,

if you look into the Pine section, those images are already there.
Please don't expect too much [ I see Sandy was already there.]

https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/j-b-pine-is-adair-around.17386/

the oldest is on page 2 about 3/4 of the page down.

Peter we only now going to try the ground growing as all efforts have been on
keeping the trees healthy and seeing how to use the earthenware pot technique
in Bonsai Today. So trunks have to be thickened.

As I mentioned to Sifu [ Adair ] nothing more for 5 years.

We are also trying to find a less stressful way to get shorter needles.
Good Day
