What are you collecting? California junipers can still be dug in April if you live in a decent climate. I can do it here but it is risky that late due to the heat. Dtrees are probably getting a little risky now since the sap has been running for two weeks already. Lifting once the buds swell can be touchy unless you dig deep and take an intact root ball. Coast live oaks can be lifted but protect from frost for a few weeks. Green house would benifit these right now. Bottom heat will promote rootage faster.

Interior live oak (goldcup) is good right now also, bottom heat is a must.

Yenling,

If I'm not mistaken, you live in Va.? It's still a bit too early to dig around here--unless you have a place you can store tree that remains above freezing. This is critical, as newly severed roots are extremely vulnerable to freezing.

Buds on trees are swelling now, but they also won't break into leaves for some time--late March. Cold temps are still in the forecast and I'd bet we get another snowstorm or two before March is out.

I usually begin collecting in mid-March.

Yup, I live on the Central Coast of CA. My fingers are crossed because I'm in escrow on a house in Nipomo CA with a decent sized back yard!

Ha Ha, I've never seen that Beer before-Yenling is my middle name. Shoot I have to try some of that Beer, might be my fav.

Smoke-thanks you answered my question.

Curious- what do you use for bottom heat? have any suggestions for an inexpensive set up? I'm interested in collecting what I think are Utah Junipers-I know it's snowing right now, but I would assume the best time to collect these would be right when the snow let's up-which I found out should probably be in about a month. Which according to you- should be good if they are anything like CA Junipers. I have collected one of these a couple months before Winter and it's doing great. But, Im pretty sure collecting in spring should work just as well.

Thank you,
