I was looking back over the recent posts in this forum and realized that I hadn't posted any new pot photos in quite a while.

So as a tribute to ketoi, here are a few of my cracked pots.

Enjoy.

Very cool Paul! glazing adds a whole new dimension to crackery. Are any ovals?

Thanks Keith, the positive feedback means a lot, especially when it comes from the king of crackery himself.

These are all round pots.

I've only made a few cracked ovals. They are a bit of a pain to construct.

If I get a chance, I'll photograph one and post it here for you to critique.

What grade of sodium silicate do you use?

I have found that there are several different grades of sodium silicate available and they produce different results.

Regards,
Paul

Hi Ray!

Thanks for the kind words.

You have a good eye. The glaze on that particular pot is a traditional Japanese Oribe glaze. It is one of my favorite glazes. I like the way it transitions from green to red. This is a result of the reduction firing that I do.

Have a great day.

Regards,
Paul

My faves are 564 and 567

Didn't know there was grades of silicate, I adjust the thickness of application to get different results.

Didn't know there was grades of silicate, I adjust the thickness of application to get different results.

I have access to two different grades of sodium silicate. The standard ceramic grade which is fairly fluid and an industrial grade that is used to make sand molds for casting iron. The industrial grade has the viscosity of corn syrup and gives a very different pattern of cracks.

The standard ceramic grade gives a much finer network of cracks as shown in the first two photos below.

While the industrial grade gives a much coarser network of cracks as shown in the last two photos below.

I have found that I can adjust the size of the crack patterns by mixing the two grades in different ratios.

Something you might want to look into.

I appreciate the feedback on the pots.

Regards,
Paul

As always they look great but I like PX-01-10a.jpg the best.

Hi Francis,

Thanks for your feedback on that pot. When it came out of the kiln I wasn't sure about it at first. I thought the contrast between the black glaze and the gray clay body might be a little over the top for a bonsai pot.

Cheers,
Paul

I like them all too, especially the blue one. Are they round or oval? The photography is excellent! How do you signed your pots? Thanks for sharing your work. They are fantastic!

Si,

Thank you for all the kind words, I appreciate you taking the time to comment.

All the pots shown in this post are round and range in size from 7" to 8 1/2" in diameter.

Below is a photo of how I sign my pots. Basically, its the same as my avatar.

Cheers,
Paul
