Treat this the way you would an olive.

Which is:

Remove bottom leaves. New shoots will grow where leaves are attached. You don't want branches going down. So, remove leaves growing on the underside of branches.

In spring, let new shoots grow. Pull off old leaves. Wire the new shoots while they are still pliable. Put in curves: up/down and side to side. Use aluminum wire. Remove wire when it starts to cut in. About 6 weeks. Cut back! Let grow. Wire. Let grow. Remove wire. Cut back. Repeat as long as it's growing!

This process builds: 1) ramification; 2) gentle curves in branches rather than sharp angles if no wiring is done; 3) taper in the branches.

Isn't defoliating boxwoods except for the end 2 leaves how you reduce the actual leaf size?
Harry Harrington is at tree4me is where I saw it.

I don't see the point of removing an active leaf, which is putting energy into the system, when you can remove the dormant bud.

Removing the leaf also won't stop the shoot.

Where removing the bud will.

Win win.

That.

That's what makes me feel like we do it because the tree will respond by sending new shoots everywhere a leaf was removed...

But clearly that is not a branch structure we want.

Skip to cutting to the first two leaves...
And you can probly cut to bifork those in the same year.

The results of this defoliation...
Will have us cutting back to the first fork anyway.
So all that regeneration of new shoots above that is a waste.

Maybe this is being somehow confused with doing this to create small leaves for a show...

But I would never send my tree to a show with that shitty end structure.

Ramification makes small leaves....
All this Bullshit teaching about boxwood doesnt make them any different.

It may account for why so many people have such a hard time with them though.

Just because it can react...
Doesn't mean we WANT that reaction.

I would love for someone to explain to me mathematically how defoliation is better for boxwood.
How is it better for design?
Health?

It simply doesn't add up.

And to create them to fit into scale with the tree better.
And now since there are more leaves doesn't it fit that there are more buds for even more finer ramification.
I have 3 of these things. Korean or whatever they are. I don't do much with them. Mainly just hack at them occasionally.
They don't really do much for me.
I'll be packing them down to our show next year to unload them. They're not bad trees,a couple are actually nice trees but my tastes in trees are changing. I seem to only like just a few so I'm getting rid of the others.
I've been hanging around Vance too much I guess but I really am into conifers anymore.
I still have a butt load of elms but besides those the only deciduous trees are the 1 Hawthorne and a little amur.
Pines and junipers with a sprinkling of spruce and tamaracks tossed in are the trees I like most.

There is no difference in leaf area between cutting back to two verses defoliate leaving only two. But the newest and most productive are at the tip. The oldest and least productive are lower/inside. If the species will pop interior buds when the branch tip in place, ___________ . :)

Like markyscott says, isn't it better to have something to cut back to?

On a....

fairly fast now

Me too!

Honestly..

. If the species will pop interior buds when the branch tip in place, ___________ . :)

Why not leave ALL those leaves HH removes..
And knock off all the other Buds...
So the tree doesn't waste energy creating those other new shoots we don't need..

And utilizes it only on what we are keeping?

Defoliation is used to refine the branchlets, of trees that are normally able to drop leaves.

It's a way of enjoying the same tree twice. In leaf as a mass and stark necked:eek:

Does Boxwood self defoliate ?

Just lost the top of the Zanthoxylum, because no one here, knew to use the boxwood rule, leave
the last two leaves. New tree.
Back to stage one, regrow a new top
Good Day
Anthony

Sorce maybe you need to study mass like this -

The darks have been enhanced ----------- see trees that are full under midday sun.

Box in the bag

Uh...I really really love this!
Lol!

Baggin' the Box!

So.......

I got a little backstory on this piece from Jennifer Price, turns out if I sniff at this pot real hard, I can catch a whiff of @Walter Pall basement!

And oooh! I scratched and sniffed and petted and rung and spun this on my finger..

Lil Maple Chop on the inside too....that was the deal sealer for me. The thing that made it "ok" to buy a pot.

By German Artist Klaudia Mayer.

Apparently, she no longer makes pots, and that this pot went through W.P. and my great new local Bonsai friend J.P. to get to me, makes it quite freaking special!

Too...ever since I got kicked out the Walter Judged contest for my Azalea Shtick, I try to leave the nursery with something he would be proud of, and this Swepper is one that I always work with that in mind. To push myself to make it as good as I can.

Finding this pot for this tree and getting some good W.P. stories to boot....
Really feeling right.

Walter, if you care to share any thoughts on this pot and or pot/tree, I would love to hear them, even if I don't!;):(

I intend to jam it in here in summer, and utilize the slightly offset feet to compliment the lean of the tree.

I've been convinced I MUST meet you, so possibly this March if I am not in Missouri for baseball, surely for Oktoberfest.

At which time I will be forcing one of my own pots on you!

Speaking of gifts!

I'm glad I brought a gift pot for Jennifer, because she gifted me this sweet little Lubos Skoda test tile pot!

Nice!

And...
She brought a couple pieces for me to hold.....
Damn!
There really aren't words to explain what Cameras don't do for those pots!

Exquisite!

I'm a "simple, clean, texture free" sort of person, so I never really got into these textured pots....

But let me tell you! Holding them and looking at the detail changed my life!
What looks red is really red and purple and pink and colors you didn't know existed!

So....for you smart pot collectors that come read entire pot posts....

In talking to Jennifer, and understanding the Forever Truly One of a Kindedness of these pots, and what it takes to get them here....
You better POP that BIN on them auctions before I do!

No way in hell I wasn't getting this one!
Even if I can't fit this tree in it, it's nice to begin building a worldy collection with this start. Damn, besides my one Iker Slab, this is my first non-round pot!

So Perfectly Imperfect! Love it!
