I am new to Bonsai, and am very interested in collecting specimens from the wild (Along highways, in parks .etc). However I am having an extremely difficult time finding anything about the regulations surrounding recreational plant collection. Does anyone know of general rules/where to find them. I am also curious if anyone has suggestions for where I could legally collect some plants.

Thanks for your input.

Sorry I don't have any tips but from what I have heard VI has some great stuff. Finding permission can be difficult often it's from private land owners.

I once went to the county road commission office to ask about collecting some trees along a rural road. They said "NO " in no uncertain terms. Later that year they were all gone. Removed I assume because they were hard on the mower. It is frustrating. I have had better luck with private land owners. Many will assume they have something of value and want compensation. But there is nothing like the thrill you get when someone says, "Sure, go ahead."

Couldn't find anything specific about collecting trees for bonsai, but it has info about getting permits for natural resources, etc. Maybe give them a call? Or just browse around that website and see if there's more than what I could find.

Contact the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Contact the office corresponding to the area you wish to collect in.

You need to contact ministry of foresty, and talk to the head guy/gal for your area and convince them to give you a permit (for a small fee if i remember correctly). Cheers.

Hey Cole,
Anton introduced me to this hobby about 15 years ago, and we've collected many, many trees together. Why not pm me and I'll let you know what you can do about getting approval to collect.
You should also consider joining a club, there is one in Victoria, Around Duncan, one in Qualicum and here in Campbell River.
PS I have some trees for sale
Cheers
Graham

Been watching Alone.
It's filmed on Vancouver Island.
There are some good looking hemlock growing there I spied.
It's also loaded with bear and cats.
