Ok. I am totally Japanese Black Pine illiterate. I recently got a really good deal on one so I thought i would ass it to my collection. Any advice on how to care for them or where to go for some good reading? I am in South Louisiana where it gets pretty brutal in the summer

Steve's book is good, especially as a reference, but you'll be through it in a couple hours, and it has no color photos. Stone Lantern's Compilation of articles from Bonsai Today is also pretty good, especially if you don't have the magazines:

http://www.stonelantern.com/Pines_p/b1pine.htm

On styling, when it's time, here is a slideshow that follows a JBP training from a nursery can to a bonsai pot over the course of several years:

Welcome to the wonderful world of pines...it's a whole new ballgame!

Don't forget Boon, perhaps the best with JBP in North America. Check out his DVDs, http://www.bonsaiboon.com/pages/shopping.html

I always love posts like these........ charging someone as "the best".

In the top five ....yes most definately.

Kathy Shaner cuts a mean black pine as well as Kenji Miyata, In fact my teacher, Katsumi Kinoshita has some marvelous black pine with unbelievable needles.

I have seen them all and can actually compare...so Best in North America is very subjective and personel as well as a huge amount of hype to heep on someone.

Cheers, Al

Read it again, Al. "Perhaps" the best. Obviously opinions may vary. I'll be sure to choose my words more carefully next time.

Take care.

I will be competing with Boon this weekend at the second annual Toko Kazari in Hanford CA. I will ask him how he feels about being "perhaps the best"

BTW we have a secret contingent coming in from Utah this year. I wonder who they are......

Back to the original post, Boon's JBP video was pretty eye popping, especially after seeing him work on them in Topeka. By no means do I understand everything about them, but I like to think I'm a lot further along than I was two months ago.

I believe he was asking for advice on the care of JBP and I offered Boon's DVDs as a source, with my personal comment attached. I'll be sure to get your approval before posting next time.

Good luck in Hanford.

Always a pleasure.

It depends where you live. In Southern California, if you are going to only decandle once per season, you wait longer because the growing season is so long. In this way the growth from the 2nd set of buds will not be overly long/strong. I decandle around the 4th of July, which is very late for many other areas of the country.

Where do you live?
