I'm looking to collect a few trees this coming year and I'm curious if the the collected trees would benefit from being put into the ground in amended soil? Do people amend their ground space with soil/bark/turface mixes vs just digging a hole for the tree to be placed into with native soil?

it really depends on what your native soil is like.

But why collect a tree and put it back in the ground? If it's not ready for a pot, just leave it where is and collect it later.

True dat. I tend to get newly collected trees into some kind of container right off the bat. Putting them back in the ground shouldn't be necessary, as presumably you've collected a nice "mostly finished" trunk--which is what collecting is all about.

Putting the thing back in the ground does mean you will have to collect it a second time...

Planting it back in the ground might also kill it--depending on soil conditions.

True Dat !

Into a pot or grow box.....consider it an ICU for your tree. You'll have much more control over the tree during its recovery. Later, for what ever reason, you feel it needs to go into the ground then do it then. I use a mushroom soil and grit mix for my grow rows...can't beat it.

This is what I was looking for. Thanks for this!
