This is the coolest tree in person, it's so gnarly, and the trunk twists don't read as good in a photo. Kurume get such nice fall color too, so that's a big bonus. This one is a purple flowering type. I am digging the old school look this has, I'll do some tweaking, but mostly will keep this as is.

New tree to me this fall, it's why I sold off a few things, one of which was the ume.... But this one I was one I just couldn't not have.
Got it from BIC, if you want azalea they have the stuff. Actually they have a lot of nice things...
It's a one of a kind tree for sure, which is what I sort of always gravitate toward.

Who needs flowers?
This doesnt.
Ah, but when it blooms... I can't imagine how good it will be. Kurume have smaller blooms, so are a bit more refined in bloom, so it's going to be exciting to see.
I have always liked azaleas, and satsuki, but most are not standouts when not in bloom. This one, and the Kozan satsuki sumo that I got this year can stand on their own without blooms. That's why I finally jumped into the azalea pool.

Nice, in some ways, I like the kurumes better than satsukis.
As this is my first one, can you tell me if this tree is fully deciduous, or semi-evergreen? Some of the highly colored leaves are dropping now. It is gorgeous fall color! I will try to take a new shot of the coloring it has currently.

Have you thought about any direction you might want to go with the styling?

When I was looking at the photos of this tree before I got it, I thought about doing some styling changes to it. Perhaps to fill in the upper right open space a little, maybe modernize the design a little.. But in person, I don't know if there is much I can do to make it "better" at all. I will do some wiring and moving things around slightly, but as of now no plans to change it in any meaningful way.

It really depends on the cultivar. I have some, like hino crimson, lose very few, if any. Others lose almost all of them and a few are in between.

This is my Hino yesterday:

Here is an unknown Kurume, most of its leaves have turned and are falling/will fall:

When it is done, only these will be left, the ones around the flowers:

Another Kurume, it loses a lot, but not as many as the one above:

Indicas do it to, this one is glacier white and has almost finished dropping leaves:

Satsukis are the same way, even though azaleas are considered evergreen, they are really semi-decidious. Another cool thing that I noticed is that the plants that have shades of red (red, pink, purple, and all shades in between) for flowers will develop a reddish tint to the leaves that they keep and the deepness of the tint is related to the intensity of the cold. White flowered azaleas' leaves will get a yellow tint to the ones that they keep.

If I my ask, where did you get this one? I saw where you posted BCI above, but I am not familiar with this acronym. I have a lot of azaleas, but none as impressive as the ones you have acquired. I hope to get one next year.

Bonsai Import Company. They get a lot of their stock from the Kennet Collection, so have many nice azaleas.

Thanks for the information, looks like this Kurume will loose most of the leaves, and my satsuki will loose the yellow ones A couple new shots, it's such a bonus that I didn't know about with the fall color on this tree!

Your Hino is lovely. :)
