I just dug this one out of the front yard (I’ve got project trees squeezed into areas all over my yard… As long as it gets fun and the HOA doesn’t complain, it’s good :) ). It was a seedling I bought from Brent over nine years ago. It’s got a lot of refining and it’s future… Recovering in Anderson flat right now. I just wish these things would back-bud...
I don’t have a problem getting them to back-bud when they’re growing strongly... all the whips on this stump grew in the last year after it was cut back a year ago.

Agreed. We’ll have to compare notes, I think we have umes from the same batch. Mine has not yet flowered.

Everything is beginning to wake up in my yard, so for good or for bad, re-potting season is here in my little slice of heaven:p. I'm holding off as long as possible to do the real big boys, so I decided to do this little guy. For anyone who hasn't had the pleasure of working with ume, they like to grow roots when happy... lot's and lots of roots!

Several of the remaining big roots were cut back and the rest of the fibrous root mass significantly reduced.

Here it is wired into the only cascade pot I have large enough to handle the still developing root system... I'm planning to grow it into a semi cascade.

The canopy trimmed back and ready to go!

How did it go from a fairly shallow container to sticking up out of the top of a deep one? If you cover those cuts, the trunk has a nice swoop to it.

It was tossed into the anderson flat post collection because it it fit the root ball and I hadn't a clear plan of it's future styling. My hope going forward is to increase the tilt a bit more to the left and lower the cascading branch on the left(can't really see it from the crummy pics ) to the soil level, hence the cascade pot. Obviously, it's not the right pot, but it fit's the fairly wide root base and will allow the tree to really grow well for another few years. Here's a quick picture from just right of the front that shows that cascading branch a bit better. I'm hoping to carve many of those branch scars, but I want to do it right and I don't have much experience carving on ume... so I'll take my time there.

I cut mine back pretty hard last month too and didn’t repot, but yours appears to be ahead.

Everything is moving fast right now. My maple raft has foot long extensions and even my jwp has candles 2+ inches long.
Rain now, and 80s this weekend, pretty sure everything is about to bust open soon! First round of fert went on Sunday.

Nice base! Did you put a tile or board or something under it when you first planted in the ground? I've got one that has been in the ground for about 7 years now. I planted on a tile but haven't done anything to roots since. Probably should think about digging it pretty soon...

Good to see they throw plenty of shoots from the trunk when they are chopped.

Nope, just planted in my yard and cut back periodically over the last 7-8 years. The soil in my yard is shallow, so perhaps that forced the roots to grow more laterally. Ume grow like weeds here so that may help with the back budding. It’s a fun tree to work with here.

Whoa, progressing rapidly! Nice!

Hopefully tonight will be the last of over-night temps in the 40's!! Not a June weather pattern that's normal around here, just the new normal I suppose.

Nice hunk of Ume!!!
