After being away working in inverness for 12 day's i came home to find my girlfriend had forgot to water my berberiss on a rather hot day it is still alive as some new growth has appeared. Do i trim the dead leaves off or even the branches ?? do i increase or decrease feed ( i have gave it some potash cos i know it helps recovery from trauma) any advice greatly needed

Don that sucks, I'd cut off the dead leaves, use good bonsai watering techniques(water thouroughly then dry down before waterin again, remembering that this will use far less water until it grows new leaves), and let it have some sun. I would skip the ferts until you see good growth again. See what happens after that, Good Luck.

Don't feed it... don't water it as much right now... and go ahead and leave the tree alone for now. The dead leaves will fall off, and often times new leaves will sprout at the base of lost ones with many trees (though I don't know this specific species). So you don't want to risk damaging potential buds by handling the tree too much.

So just being attentive to keeping the soil evenly moist would be good. Filtered sunlight would be better than too much direct generally as well.

Once it grows out more, you can trim it back for any areas that have clearly died back.

hahahah talk about conflicting advice in some ways... just goes to show there are many approaches to the same situation. lol

;)

To quanitiful my comments... less than normal watering is because the tree will not be "transpiring" without a full set of leaves... and will only make the tree more soggy... and the filtered sunlight is to promote more attention by the tree to leaf development... because trees in brightsunlight tend to have smaller leaves because they need to have less area to collect the energy from the sun. Hence why trees in a lot of shade tend to have much larger leaves... for increased collection of more limited light.

Crazy but true.... talk to it. I talk to mine all the time. But then again... I come from a culture that honors ancestors and acknowledges their daily role in our lives. Something like angels, but different. I could ask my Grandmother to go look after it... she looks after mine on a regular basis. :D

Talking to plants and trees is good for their growth because as u talk u exhale co2 onto the plant/tree thus aiding photosynthesis

And we threw it out there at about the same time, yours wasn't there when i posted.

Hmmm I'll now say go with what she said, better reasoning. My water thouroughly was to make sure there weren't any dry pockets in the roots, the sun part could be a split, put them into a sunny spot until buds break to give them a chance to break, then less less sun for more leaf developement, watering though I think we are in the same place different words, (use good bonsai watering techniques(water thouroughly then dry down before watering again, remembering that this will use far less water until it grows new leaves), :D

in that case u should wait for an answer from your trees i find it worth the wait cos though it is rare for them to answer they often make more sense than humans

I think we were saying some of the same things in a different approach... that's the interesting thing about conversation... verbal or otherwise... many times people are saying the same thing from a different angle/emphasis. :D
