I was wondering if anyone has a source for tiger bark ficus. I have been trying to find a seedling or cutting but so far I can find only styled trees that cost a lot. In the late 1990's a local nursery had a real beautiful (It looks great if you could overlook the fact that it was planted in a car tire) It is what started my interest in bonsai. I would like to get a cutting so that I can grow it and train it the way I want.

Wigerts has plenty of small starter tiger barks. Prob $25 and under.

I have a tiger bark. I will be doing some layers on it next year if you can wait that long.

I want it to get about 10 inches around, but it's getting a little to big to bring back and forth for winter... I imagine if I dont do something next year it'll be to big.

Yeah thank you very much. My tree's have been loving these cooler temps. Kind of makes me worried since we still should be in the mid 90's.

I was actually planning on repotting the ficus this weekend.... Not sure with temps of 95 expected next week though

If you remove any thicker roots plant them up. Then you will have some to share.

Really? A tree would sprout from just some thick roots? Do you think with 95 degree temps I'll be okay repotting?
Yes
When I plant root cuttings they take 4 weeks sometimes to grow green tops. Just when you think they are dead and will never sprout they they will grow. How much time do you have before it gets to 45-50 degrees there?
I like to place in morning sun only after a repot. Noon and afternoon sun is too hot up here.
If you think a root cutting is dead- just scratch the bark to see if it's still green underneath.
Root cuttings for me are easier than branch cuttings to grow and the have a better shape to start.
Just protect them from the heat - shade cloth or under a tree with dappled light or the north side of the house. Water often of course in that heat.IMG_7804.JPG

You can put cutting in water and watch for roots to develop. Usually get enough to plant out in four weeks or so.

Another nice feature - if you have a bunch of small diameter plants established but want a bigger trunk, bundle five or six of them together, secure tightly with zip ties, and in a year you'll have one fused trunk.

How long do you leave it in morning sun before returning to full sun?
Depends on the heat really. My temps here are 80s now. Plus it's humid. I usually do morning sun only but I would feel comfortable now doing full sun. I think afternoon direct sun is too much. 6am-11am direct sun is good enough for me. I don't want to cook them :)

It might be ok but I don't know how to grow down south. I wish I could be more help. The very best advice I can give you is the same exact advice that I was given by my teacher.
Listen to your trees.
Are you leaves sunburnt? Dropping, droopy or thriving? If they look poor learn to make corrections quickly. Learn what works for you and repeat it often :)
