Hello all,
Recently I had the rare opportunity to visit with my first bonsai teacher, Suthin Sukosolvisit, who I have not seen in about 3-4 years. I got to do some one on one time with him in which I was very grateful. I brought him a piece of shimpaku rough stock material. With the exception of some minor fine wiring and bark removal done by me, this tree was styled exclusively by him., I figured I would just stay back and watch as this bush became a shohin masterpiece. For those who know Suthin, he is regarded as one of the best in the country at this time.

Rob

Here are the before and afters.

Some very nice work there Rob. But then the material wasn't too shabby either;)

What are the plans with the shari, do you intend to elongate it over time and join it together to form a spiral?

First I want to correct my typo in the title.. It was supposed to say time spent with a master...lol

Hello ianb.. Yes, we discussed where the shari should continue in the future... For now, this was all he wanted to do to ensure the health of the tree.

Hello Bil,,,,,lol. Nope,, it was becasue he had 75% of the entire tree wired and I was only on my 3rd sub branch...ha hah ha..and also, if I had the choice whether to let him perfectly wire the tree or me wire it, I chose him...My wiring is ok...but I wire slow... Suthin wires fast and perfect.

Doesn't he though, makes it look effortless. We have a small group looking at setting up a study group with him, hope it works out.

Hi Bill,..When I was up there.. He showed me some shimpaku's that were done in one of his workshops. The trees were absolutely outstanding... I guess the people had left some of the trees with suthin for him to look after.. These were all beautiful specimens. I was in awe of every single one of them. It seems that anything Suthin has something to do with ends up being an astoundingly beautiful bonsai. He is truly gifted...

At our last board meeting I mentioned we should be taking more advantage of having Suthin so close, and was told he's hard to schedule. Hope it works out for you too

I hope to one day meet and work with suthin.

I spent some time with him in January 2010 when he headlined our clubs mini convention. He is a great master and teacher.
