I had a beginner question regarding first year seedling branch selection. Should you let all buds grow for strength? Or direct the energy to maybe 2 or 3 buds?

Thanks for any input,20180929_105918.jpg

I have no experience yet with this stage in JBP. But in my JRP it did help to do bud selection, in the sense that it tamed the beast before it became a beast.
A 1 year old seedling underwent bud selection and later candle cutting.
Branches are kept short, needles reduced, backbudding occurred.

If you want strength and vigor, I'd personally keep them. If you want to start balancing now, then break them off.
What is best at this time in development? I honestly don't have a clue. I'm just going with it.

I think the vigor of the tree in question is important.

It is impossible to answer that question based on the photo and the information you have provided.

Where is the branch on the tree? Is it a sacrifice or final branch? Weak or strong branch relative to the rest of the tree?

The seedling needs to grow a trunk which takes lots of foliage. I'd leave the buds to grow into sacrificial branches to be removed down the road.
Thanks Dave

The photo is not from a seedling from this year i guess? Most have less buds here. The more buds, the more power growth might be generated in general, so below that point you get a maximum of growth. Reducing the buds to 2 or three will let those sections grow faster. And less shading. Can you show a total image of the tree?

It is this years seedling, there aren't any branches. This is the apex. It is the one on the right in the picture. I just wasn't sure if people go ahead and start selection this early in the game. 20180826_163947.jpg

First year seedling, let it grow, let it grow! For the first two or three years keep all the growth you can. Remove branches or buds only if they will create an issue for development. Refinement techniques such as selecting two buds and cutting back are not beneficial when growth is the primary focus.

Is that whats going on with this 8 month old? Is that a bud for another branch or just the continuation of the main branch? Im not gonna mess with it but Im just curious. First time grower of JBPs.

That looks like a terminal bud (apex bud) not a lateral bud (branch)

Terminal, there might be small buds at it's base these will grow as a whorl of sidebranches. In most cases there is one terminal and 1 or 2 lateral. In the first picture of this thread there is one with many...
