I have seen some people on ficus use a graft through the middle of the chop to help healing. Have you thought of that? Might it work with tridents?

SWEET little tree!!!

Quick few questions. Do you cut it back like that every fall? Do you sometimes let it grow and get a little "wild" and then do a big cut back to keep it's small size?

Since it’s so small, letting it grow too wild will make the branches thicken up too much. This was a tip from Al: when a new shoot starts to grow, pinch it back to one pair of leaves, early so the internodes are short. Then when the resulting pair of shoots extend, let one run longer (as in 3-4” long at most), and pinch the other back to 1-2 nodes. I’ll do this 3-4 times a season, and then prune it back like this in the fall.

All the areas I have marked in red are places that for the most part will not bud. This is internodal growth and is pretty much useless for chps because it will just eventually dry out without budding if chopped in this area.

Every now and then I re-read an old thread and re-learn something that I have forgotten :) I don't work with maples much because I have such difficulty keeping them alive here is SoCal, but I won't be here all my life :)

I've been wanting more shohin including a trident maple to put into all these pots I keep buying. Need to make good stuff ?

Recent shot after spring trimming. I’m trying to decide if I can squeeze it down into a smaller pot and get it to a true Shohin (current pot is about 10” wide), or allow it to gradually grow about double in height (current height is about 6”).

Currently it’s kinda stuck in between, with a too-big pot for a too-short tree. I love the pot, so I’m tempted to let the tree grow bigger.

You can always grow it out bigger. If you don't act now, you likely won't be able to rein it in as a shohin, pot-wise.

Tough one for me. Part of me would love to see it with a bigger canopy to match the trunk. On the other hand, it is cool to see it also in this way where proportions are more exaggerated using a smaller pot.
