Stolen from over on the resolution thread for 2019
New Years resolution...usually don't make them. But, would love to add a nice little clump to my bench. Hold out to something which speaks to me...not just jumping at the first one I see.
Crap on a cracker! ? came back to remind myself of this. Up on auction...clump. Roots aren't a factor, I would plant it deeper. Clump. (((Sigh)))Nandina Compacta a.k.a. Holy Bamboo is what it is called. I need talked off a ledge guys.

The species does not come up in a search of our forum which had me pause...

It's just a dwarf version of the regular Nandina domestica, heavenly bamboo. A search for just nandina should bring up some results.

Thanks Adair! Right...that was my resolution. I'm just drawn to clumps. But...I need to find something more "me". Thanks for bringing me off the ledge.
Darlene, Shannon Saylor has some pretty cute little “forests” clumps on the Facebook “99 cent bonsai auctions” this week. You might want to check them out. (Or shoot him a PM to see if he has any others in your price range.) Shannon develops amazing stuff! And he’s a great guy as well.

Listen to Adair. Both of the clumps are sold but ask him if he has more. You will feel better about yourself in the morning.

Yeah, those sold. Will send him a message. Much nicer material than the clump bamboo. Thanks, will do just that. The one Japanese maple clump Had intrigued me. But the wire scars kept me from bidding. I had seen it prior to one buying it.

Mark Comstock just posted some Japanese maples on Facebook. Some are clump style.

You could do a lot worse than some of these!

I've got several nandina in large pots by my pool. I would not recommend them for bonsai. They are called heavenly bamboo for a reason - more like a compound ornamental grass and less like a tree or shrub. Would probably be great as a companion plant. They throw multiple trunks and have a habit of dying off a trunk every now and then. Invisible in a landscape plant, disastrous in a bonsai. They do not have branches - just a main trunk and compound leaves (similar to bamboo).

They do color up nicely in the Fall... though mine do not drop their leaves.

Thanks, found him! Adair for thinking of my...but none spoke to me, should have grabbed the clump that went on 99 cent auction. Oh well...your friend I did contact him he only has trident clumps left. And, well...of my two ten year projects...one came down with a fungus...and it was when I was down with the reactive airways. And couldn't treat it as often as I would have liked...had to wait for the husband to find time. And lost it. So would rather...look into Japanese maples for clump or another species entirely.

Comstock has hundreds of those little Japanese Maples. Send him a message, let him know what you’re looking for.

Before I had a chance to ask him...I found an intriguing auction I am watching. A flowering number. But will keep him in mind for later. ? Thanks @Adair M for the heads up on a contact though. I might wait until closer to spring before I add one. I honestly hate shipping and acclimating in winter. But this other piece...is quirky. Butt ugly right at the moment. But I see potential. Hope that keeps the bids low.

? I should be in bed fast asleep ?...I teach Sunday School tomorrow. But slightly worried there is someone out there that does "ugly" as well in the bonsai hobby, so watching an auction end. It has potential to be quirky in the right persons hands I think. (((Sigh))) shaking head.
