So I was at the local bonsai store looking for cherries and saw a weeping cherry, it was 85 bucks, the last one and had an interesting story about where it came from, according to the seller he got it at a show in san mateo from an old blind vendor. Any way I always buy a tree each year to add to my collection, however this is the worst time of year for bonsai as the temperature changes rapidly for example today its 42F but next sunday its gonna get down to 23F and two days after that it will be high of 55f. I have put it with my two other maples in a dark and not dry basement to start dormancy. If I start dormancy is that bad or can I bring it in and out of dormancy over the next 3 months?

Just curious, what kind of cherry? Weeping Barbados cherries, in case it is, is more tropical and would not appreciate being in a cold, dark basement.

Did it not have any kind of tag for identification when you bought it? Did it have leaves?
The bonsai store owner said he got it at a show in san mateo from an old asian blind vendor who has good stuff but doesn't label his plants. It was not in the tropical section but with all the other deciduous plants. I looked at a few barbados cherries and they seem to look different, especially the branches, its in the photo front and center with all the moss

Assume it is one of the species in genus Prunus, probably hardy near you. You won't be able to narrow it down until you are able to get pictures of leaves and flowers.

Sounds like it is likely a magical plant that will make your deepest desires come true if you keep it alive long enough to bear it's magical alien fruit pods.

So it dropped all its leaves but 3 and everything else fell off in August, which is weird to me. My old place had 4 black walnut trees above it and could have been affected by juglone , but my neighbor with a giant cherry tree in her yard says "first to bloom, first to drop its leaves", so I am taking her word for it. I will have pictures when I wire it this weekend.

My weeping cherry, planted 30 years ago and about 40 feet tall, drops its leaves very early and is just about bare.
