I finally took the time to put together an update on my entries. They are all still alive but some are doing better than others.

#1 American hornbeam

IMG_20180809_155020039.jpg

I was able to get it into an appropriate size pot but I’ve gotten less growth than I hoped for. Next spring I’ll chop everything back and hope for back budding. I don’t know that I’ll be able to build enough of a crown in one year though.

Full tree:

#2 Pitch pine

IMG_20180809_154515572.jpg

This one has shown the most promise. I got into a good size pot in the spring. I have another slightly smaller pot that it might go into next spring. I’m getting good back budding at the base. I’ll probably leave the sacrifice trunk on until next year to help thicken the base a bit more. I’m also not certain that the shoots at the base are enough to support the tree yet.

#3 Mugo pine

IMG_20180809_154348305.jpg

This one is what it is. It really hasn’t changed much. I worked the roots pretty hard last year so I was a bit worried that I was going to lose it this year. I’m still not certain that I won’t. It only opened a few new needles this spring and I lost a couple branches. If it makes it I’ll wire it next year.

I am letting go of my mame ficus from this contest. It is still alive but I am passing it on. This contest did inspire a few other projects and purchases. i am very happy that you had it. I will have no other trees left in the thread.
You will see more of smaller influence in my style likely from now on. :)
I do love tiny trees.

All my trees are alive! They seem to be happy although the Japanese Maples do not like the dry wind where we live now.

Japanese Maple, not a fancy tree but I have a fun idea that is waiting to be explored!

Juniper, I apologize I do not know what kind. It was labeled Golden Juniper (?). The price was to good to pass up for what I wanted.

Japanese Maple in my smallest pot. I keep it on a larger shaded tree so it does not wind scorch like the larger Japanese Maple.

All three together with a relative size comparison.

Thank you for putting this together as I would not have really tried this approach!

#1: Chinese Elm.
Trying to get the primaries set, and will let grow a bit more in the spring to force the trunks to fuse. I will need to re-pot so it is more centered in the pot, and bend the trunk a bit to the left to get some movement and level off the primary branches.

#2: Crab Apple.
I mostly have primary branches where I want them, and hopefully they will flower/fruit next year, but they still need a bit of development. There are also a couple stubs left from where I cut the large, straight branches with no taper that will need to be carved smooth once the die-back occurs.

#3: Crab Apple.
Lower branches are where I want them, but need to bud back and develop some ramification, which may not happen by the end of next year, but I will still give it a shot and see how it goes. There is a section on taper-less, branch-less trunk in the upper-half of the trunk, but there are some small buds forming. Hopefully these can become useful branches in the near-future.

Thanks for your efforts with this. Good fun and pushes me a little harder.

Ordered a nice 4.5 inch round x 3 inch deep cascadish pot from Lynn August for the creeper above. I;ve been craving one of her's anyway. Way too late to repot the thing but it's tuff. It'll spend the winter in my crawl space when it gets below freezing. The good thing about tiny trees... I thought the 5" plastic trainer was okay but, that's my bad. It'll slip in the new one just fine and I'll go after the roots next year.

This thread can still be used for random updates on your little one's !
Felt the need to repot this WL Ficus as it was (I believe) holding too much water.I killed another one couple year ago from (again I believe)from over watering in the winter.
I didn't cut any roots which they needed and simply stuffed into a much smaller and shallower pot with more lava and less but larger particles of DE. If it makes it I'll try to address the circling roots this summer. You can see all the yellowing leaves which make me think too wet. We'll see...IMG_20181230_114327750.jpgIMG_20181230_114341120.jpgIMG_20181230_122031865_HDR.jpgIMG_20181230_124034132.jpg

My willow leaf, looks similarly crappy. I'm going to see if it comes back, before I consider repotting.

I pulled the Creeper out of it's pot and looked like death had arrived. Small amount of roots had done nothing since the fall repot and mouse chewing off 2 of it's 3 legs. I was going to trash it and wife said give it a chance... Put it in a plastic container about the size of a spray paint cap.
Well... surprised me.
Other 2 tropicals are doing well and waiting to get outside.
