Hello all!

I am new to bonsainut, but I was wandering through some posts and didn't happen to see too many on this style. I am considering giving it a try with some junipers. Rather than root-over-rock, where the roots are coming down into the pot, I really want the tree to be contained in the rock. I'd like to go for a mountain/cliff image. Now I know this is a challenge, but it seems worth it! :D Having said that, do you offer any key advice? Most of the stuff online on this style is quite terse. Also, I have absolutely no idea where to find a suitable rock. Recommendations? Thanks!

what type of tree do you want on your cliff/mountain? tufa rock works well and can be carved to accomadate the tree/trees.

Dan,

Thanks for the rock info! In my head, I saw it like this:

I'm not sure what kind of rock that is. Tufa rock definitely a possibility; I'm sure it'd be easier. As far as trees go, I am thinking one or two junipers. If you're asking styling, I am pondering windswept to accentuate an imagery of a seaside cliff. Of course to all of this I'm open for ideas.

You may want to try and find Ibigawa rock...not cheap. You may get lucky by checking out some of the bonsai nursery sites. Other than that, you may have to go with what's available near where you live.

G, the Feb 4th post is awesome and pretty much what I'm going for. I want the junipers in with the rock and some moss interspersed. What kind of soil mixture should I be using? And I guess I should just look for this rock at a nursery?
