Currently it’s kinda stuck in between, with a too-big pot for a too-short tree. I love the pot, so I’m tempted to let the tree grow bigger.
I think of shohin pots being 'one-hand' size or more specifically dimensions of 4" to 6". There are absolutely fabulous pots made in that size range that you don't have yet. It looks like you might be able to squeeze this guy into such a pot. So I think this is what you ought to do. If it doesn't work out, back to this pot and grow it up.

It's a lovely tree but the pot does make it look small. I may have missed it, but why are you using this size container? Is there a root issue that prevents a shallower container?

Not really, I’ve just been working it slowly into a smaller pot every couple years, and stalled out on this one because I like the pot. I do believe I will be able to get it into a pot that is the “right” scale for the tree and for a Shohin display in the next repot...assuming I can find just the right pot.

This one would be close, with a shoehorn and a little luck.

Us SoB’s have a running inside joke about “Kirbying” a tree into a pot. John Kirby is very good at stuffing Sumo Shohin into tiny pots. Tridents have such strong and resilient root systems that they “Kirby” very well.

Matty O can fix you up with any number of incredible pots for your tree.

But, I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know!

inspirational and nice to see that the tree was done correctly at each step! A lesson plan for myself! For what it's worth, if it were my tree I'd be stuffing it into a smaller pot and getting gitty like magical Christmas candy land

Actually I hadn’t the term “Kirbying”...was thinking more like Al Bundying! May just give it a squeeze next March.

But the rest, yes. Even my wife knows what a box from Matty O means (in the rare case she finds one before I unpack it and destroy the evidence, and hide the new pot among all the others...) ?

Ahhh yes, one of the many reasons I now have my Matty O boxes sent to my work address??

For reference: a “Kirbyed” Shohin trident:

omg. the thought has crossed my mind many times...lol, and then I can't resist temptation and say "you have to check this pot out honey, it's sweeeeet". I keep waiting on her to get mad when I spend money on pots, but she never does. She's a keeper :) She even takes my trees off of the benches if it gets too windy and I'm not there!

while not nearly as nice (yet!) as your tridents, I do have an American elm that I potted up this year. I'm pretty proud and happy about fitting it into this pot. When I got the tree it was in a field and 15 feet tall, and it's my first field grown piece that I've styled completely myself and put in a bonsai pot

wait, is that yellow one a Sam Miller pot in that first photo? Damn, maybe I should have put it in that one ;) I had to hit BIN precognitively to buy that one

If this tree is to look in scale in the correct pot, it will have to be ground layered. That upper picture is not going to fit in the appropriate pot the way it is.

If you do "stuff" it into a small pot, it will never be strong.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who destroys the evidence of my bonsai related purchases before the wife gets home.

I think the latest pic is the best so far with nice negative space in the branching.
But I think it would be more impressive with more ramification also.
