Where do you buy your pots, tools, soils, etc?
I am having increasing difficulty finding quality pots, tools, and soils. Quality imported pots for finished bonsai are especially hard to find.

Any suggestions where to buy in the US? I am in Atlanta, GA, but don't mind ordering on-line and paying shipping if I can find what I want.

What about wholesalers? Is there anyone comes to mind that wholesales larger quantities of quality pots at resale prices?

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Rick,

You are close to a good supplier. Bonsai by the Monestary I believe is in Conyers Ga. not far from Atlanta. Their website is at Bonsaimonk.com.

Hope this helps,

The Monk Monastery has changed some over the years - they still offer some pots but trees and material were running low last time I visited. Plant City Bonsai is another good location in the ATL area to go for material and they do have a decent range of pots as well as some pot creations by local artists for sale. I've got a new kiln coming this summer and rows of things to fire, (Last Kiln fired it's last pot this past Sept, she served many years time!), but I'm nowhere near show quality yet (I prefer rougher designs anyhow) and mass production is just a dream..

I don't think that will help all that much, not many places in the states (yet) making pots on a grand scale - many artists making great individual pieces, however. In most cases 'wholesale' type pots (mass produced slip pots) are imported from the East then resold, not much chance of finding them at resale prices after paying international freight charges. For good pots made by recognized artists or with a history, even less chance here in the US w/o paying for it in the end.

As the art/passion in the state grows (It's been trying to since the 50's) maybe one of those 'buds' will take off and someone will start up a pot factory. Hmm that does sound more promising than a pre-bonsai farm though..

Just a comment from a new guy. Glad to see some other folks in my area, I feel pretty alone in North Georgia.

Over the years I've bought over half my pots on Ebay. Modern Chinese pots found there are good quality and great bargains IMO, and the antique Chinese pots from the two Shanghai dealers, while pricey, are occasioanlly exquisit, and doing business with them is easy.

I have also found ordering Tokoname pots from Japan at this site - http://www.tokoname.or.jp/bonsai/ - is a wonderful resource. The prices are great compared to US prices, even with shipping factored in, and they are great to do business with, and the pots are packed amazingly well. The only draw back is that the wait time can be around three months. I've gotten about 8 pots from them over the years, and was well satisfied each time.

The Monastery is in the midst of moving to new quarters in their recent expansion. They currently have a moving sale.
