Hi, I received my first bonsai just under two months ago. I wasn't told the species but I think I got it down to a type of juniper. Primarily the only thing I've done is keeping it well watered and in sunlight, so any other tips are welcome.!
Over the past couple weeks I noticed the tips of the leaves have turned white, and I'm quite concerned.
I've attached some pictures:

Thanks for the help!

Welcome to Crazy!

It looks like it was healthy until sometime after fall growth started, after the summer solstice, then took a drying hit.

I'm based in Auckland, New Zealand so we've just come out of winter and started spring. Should I be concerned with the colouring?

I dont see any browning or yellowing so i dont think it's a water issue. Im thinking it's nutrients based?

That's what I'm concerned about because I don't know anything about that kind of stuff. Maybe I'll try find a specialist store near me to see what they think. Thanks!

You would be better off here then a big box store many times over! What you should look into is 'whats the type of fertilizer for a juniper'.

sunlight and water...not too much or too little of either and you may have a chance since it’s spring.
There are folks here from your region. Here, it is supposed to be autumn, fascinating...could attempt to reverse engineer swap calendar for some relative searching..I’d tread lightly there though for regional nuance

It was decorated with the pebbles, it's only a thin layer. Lots of soil underneath.
Photo of under them rocks in and outta the pot?
From listening to Bonsai Matsu and Bonsai-En podcasts from your bend of the woods, if it’s super dry there maybe look to comparative soils for dry places if someone believes mix too water retentive

Ive seen this type of growth on landscape junipers - usually when over exposed to sunlight after a pruning. I would put tree into a location that gets morning and late afternoon sun but is shaded from 11-3. I would then slowly acclimate to full sun.

For fertilizer, look on this site for Juniper threads and see what people with healthy plants use. I just use miracle gro 18-18-18 fertilizer for all my trees. I use a small pinch each watering (nigel saunders' technique) but i use a very open soil. You may want to do research for your soil mix.

Additionally make sure you are watering correctly. I would lose the decorative rocks, learn to check your soil daily using the chopstick or finger test methods, and water thoroughly when you water.
