did he give a reason as to why he is "done with bonsai"?
at $350 a pop it would be worth it for anybody close by to check out the trees in person....
the email he sent me after i made first contact asking him about the carolina expo and the grammatical error on his website:

Hi
I do not attend Asheville. Haven't been there in many many yrs as they should have told you. Too many politics for me.
I have 2000 trees here in the field and still 40 or 50 trees on benches.
Bulldozer will be here in the spring, clearing off the 2.5 acre field of trees.
I've given 24 yrs of hard daily work to bonsai, no vacations no freedom.
Bye bye bonsai.
Not sure what I'll do with the trees on the benches, probably sell them off. TONS of pottery etc to dump.
If I sell anything in the spring will be jap white pine and jap maples.
Thanks for web site error, but I'll be shutting it down real soon.
Good luck in bonsai
M-

I really would like to help him sell off his entire stock, I told him all I wanted in return was one of his JMaples, but he said that wouldn't work. So now I am saving up monies to buy a tree before spring.

Fwiw, I got a similar e-mail... in fact, almost verbatim... from him a few years ago. I got 3 maples from him but they were weak when purchased and I killed 2 of them trying to fix the mess of roots. $350 isn't such a deal then...

@Brian Van Fleet here's the picture of your jbp (and the shohin display that I'm pretty sure has a few more of yours).
yeah I really enjoyed your display, I thought all the clubs did a great job and I would like to thank everyone for making my first expo a very enjoyable one. I can't wait till June for the 25th anniversary.

Maybe this is why he is going out of business...

Damn, I have imagined that ground growing bonsai and trying to make a living off it is probably the best way to end up hating bonsai... but why doesn’t he just do an open dig in the spring or something. 50 bucks a tree you dig it up? Seems like he’d want to recoup some of that? People would jump on the opportunity.

You’re referring to the auction tree I won? That one is mine. Been hunting for one for years with some size 😁. Small trees are cool. Small Japanese maples require minions.
Owen, you prevented me from diversifying my collection!

I took pics of every tree (inside and out) on display. I'll try to get some posted up. Hate I didn't get to see/speak to you today @Owen Reich.
No worries. If someone got a good “after” photo, I would appreciate one or two shots of the finished bonsai. Very cool tree.

well i have only been to 2 demonstrations so far, yours on Sunday(which I really enjoy your candor) and Tyler Sherrods back in September so auctioning off the tree after is common practice, I assume. I would still hope you could post a progression of the restyling of the Deshojo. If you are hunting for large JM's have you tried the growing grounds in cherryville? I know Mach5 has one on his site, I talked to the owner and he said he is done with bonsai and will be bulldozing his farm at the beginning of spring, I think he said he had 3000 trees for 350 a pop, he also has a bunch of 50+ yr old trees in pots, he is hard to get in touch with though.
The owner’s father was a talented bonsai grower for sure.

I would like to comment more but he is quite upset with me right now and I was just trying to help and it backfired.

F that guy. He's a clown and I can't recall anybody really having a positive experience with him, including myself when i went against my better judgement.
Here's how he packs his trees for shipping....o_O

Does anyone remember the name of the man that grew that Deshojo? Was it jeremy Cantrell? I remember them saying he was from Atlanta and he was the maple expert of the south until his passing. Also there was a smaller green maple at the silent auction that went for $185, what was so special about that tree?

Yep... looks pretty familiar!

This arakawa was the only piece of material that I ever got from GG that was worth developing. In transit the whole top was broken off due to poor or rather dismal shipping methods. Generally, their nebari development was way less than stellar. At least from the material that was developed by Marc Torpa.
