Hi all,

Just noticed alot of sticky SAP and what looks like saw dust(with the sticky SAP) around the bottom/middle/top of the trunk...when I removed some of them, I noticed an empty insect larvae shell...checked my other Ume and noticed couple with similar but not as significant as this specific one. This mume has no leaf left, all dropped.

Anything I can do? Systemic fungicide?

Sorry I was too worry and didn't take any photos.

Thanks

Hi,
Systemic Insecticide - try Neem oil or similar. Has to be systemic, and will work better in the Spring, after leaf out, so when the borer sucks sap he will die. You could try drenching the leafless trunk but he will stay protected in the trunk til Spring anyway.
I wouldn’t worry about it loosing its leaves.
My opinion etc,
Charles

i had two living on an Ume i sold.one fatter than the other, same issues you speak of with sawdust where theyve burrowed into the wood and sticky sap. i inspected the tree every day and sprayed with systemic insecticide.one day i noticed one in one of its holes i stuck a piece of bonsai wire in and dug him out, looked like a vine weevil but much smaller. i flushed the second one out the same way and sprayed directly in the holes.
the tree was fine after that, i knew it was fine after no more sawdust or sap appeared.

If you have the holes, pour cleaning alcohol in them. They will come out in seconds.

I just get stuff from the hardware store. 99.9% alcohol.

I'm following because I've lost 2 spectacular collected trees and an air layer to borers over the last couple years.
Always while weak and recovering. Never a problem on the rest of my flock.

I found this...going to see if this will work...so far sincey last post I have not seen any saw dust being pushed out ..so not sure if the bugs are still in the tree or not..
