Extended season starting trees indoors

Great articles by Harley Smith

I’ve used knowledge from Harley. And so far it shows in the end results.Such as blue enhanced light and also seaweed and fulvic acid use.My seedlings branch out when they are only 5” tall and is great formulas for Mother Plants (cutting stock).
Second link has all his articles.I like his concept and is actually where I learned hydro from his online courses.

@cmeg1 man I wished you lived closer! We could chat all day about propagation, your propagation threads are always interesting. You got me wanting to buy more JBP seeds and go for another round indoors.

Where did you pick up your LED lighting?
Thanks!
Yea its great fun.
Hlg is very good with lower heat and better efficiancy.
Low heat is great when you run a sealed room on the cheap for co2.
Otherwise would need ducted lights or venting.
Mine has never been over 90f and lights turned all the way up .

check all three links all the time as pricing is different and availability too for the hlg QB’s
They usually sell out quickly

Sometimes catalog button disapears....here are the kits @Pitoon

They are also dimmable to control heat and compensate with heighth instead

Thanks! I almost bought the JBP seeds a couple mins ago, but pulled off as I need to figure out how I want to proceed.

I still have all the azalea cuttings I need to pot up before even thinking about more plants. The temps are expecting to drop for us in the next couple of days and I need to move everything into the cold frame to protect from frost.

Highly recommend fwschumacher seeds for black pine. Mine sprouted in one week after an all night kelp water soak and no pre-stratification treatment in the fridge at all planted right away.Good fresh seed It was around $15 for 1400 seeds!!

That's who I was going to make the purchase through. I'm probably going to set up the shelving and lighting before I start up anything with the seeds.

cmeg1 - serious props for this thread. Highly informative and entertaining, really appreciate the effort you're making to share all of this - and glad for all of the photos too. If you lived closer I might ask if you needed some volunteer help.

Cool,Thanks!
What can I say...I just like documenting and sharing results with other enthusiasts.
Im definately excited about the results and process and sometimes suprising results.
Seems an indoor grow room with right all perameters dialed in can really produce some results in a hurry!
Still learning and trying new things.

Japanese maples look luxurious if you ask me.

Seems they are reverting to normal color. My PPFD meter comes in tomorrow.I want to increase light to the maximum a Japanese Maple can handle! They are getting about 2-300 now and would like to give proper veg light at 4-600.
I will probably transplant these for more room too.

This ph pen is way better than using drops and color bottles(especially in cloudy water)and are easy and fun to calibrate and clean once a month!9706667E-0ECA-4CFF-865E-C0D813F473D1.jpeg

Seedling air-layer technique

Right now this technique of making a seedling layer seems better than putting in a propagator.Propagator would be excellent, but this is much easier to do 1or 2 a day as they are large enough.
I should be able to totally remove the A-OK Grodan starter plug I sliced in half when I see roots poking.
I’m actually anticipating quick results. These have hardly grew at all top wise and mainly are just thickening. They seem very high Brix with stored energy so hopefully quick rooting...hopefully a record. They have grown without a base grow formula and only on supplements and everything else.We will put to test everything I have learned about high Brix plants full of carbs producing roots really fast.Hence the co2 fertilization also!Apparently leaves allowed to energize fully without expending all energy on excess growth produce rooting hormones right in the leaf that have a downstream effect on rooting. The Kelp/fulvic acid foliar spray really accentuates this If done a couple weeks before proceeding.Fingers crossed.
These are 4-5 week old seedlings.Soon as a node starts growing so does a side branch on these seedlings! Every node has branches,it’s pretty cool.

Those JM are putting on some good growth.

Here's my rinky dink set up down in the basement. I still had some left over JBP seeds and there was a bunch of them sprouting in the fridge so I moved them into some mame pots.

Cool !
Good for you.Its nice getting a head start.I have been letting the few I have from last year take the full brunt of the cold to push them into dormancy. Was a long season for them

Another batch of seedling cuttings

These are definately more mature with darker green. In one of other trays the dark green ones seem to callous easier.I put smaller drones to see if that helps

Interesting technique. VERY interested to see how this works out.

I'm wondering as the new fine roots fill up the starter plug if they will be easy to separate out without damaging them.

Interesting technique.
Thanks,Gary!
I am interested in this too.In the times I have did this before in pond baskets and perlite outdoors, the roots extend out very straight. They are real easy to see and wil push out right along the top of whatever medium you use if you place it right. As day’s go by and I see callousing ,I will adjust the starter plug so roots stretch right along top surface or very slightly below than can take tweezers and very easily detach the Rockwool. The starter plug is sliced in half too.Thats the plan anyway.
Probably in a week this will be calloused very good.May treat as a cutting in humidity dome once roots are an inch. 👍

Re-did seedling air-layer technique

Re-did this better @Gary McCarthy .Thanks!
This will be much better than peeling away the Rockwool. The perlite will Just fall away.

Japanese Maples

Transplanted 30 of these.Giving a bit more light.I’m wondering if I can give some more after they settle. They should handle it nicely.Especially since room to grow and all leaves in good light. Will make seedling air-layers if they are conducive to rooting quickly like Zelkova are. They need to get more vigorous first before I proceed.
