Any idea what this tree is/was?

Had this growing in my overgrown garden that I finally got around to clearing up. After I cut it, I thought it had some interesting leaves. Not sure how much bigger the leaves get. The closest thing I came up with is a "White Mulberry" but my Audubon book says they are a southern tree. Any Ideas? Thought maybe it might make an interesting bonsai experiment if the leaves stayed that small.

Chub, that's what it is and they are not just a southern tree. I've seen them in Iowa.

They're so tough, if you use them for fenceposts, you have to dig them up and flip 'em over every couple years or they'll root...

I'll vouch for this, apparently you can take a 4" cutting and expect good results. The birds love these things, and that means bird poop all over the place, that and rotting fruit, big mess these are.

I imagine that's how this tree got im my garden:D. There are a couple of berry trees about five or six house's up the street. I guess they must be mulberries.

Just dug it up and put it in a 2 gallon pot. If it lives it will be a miracle. I did a butcher job trying to get it out. Was growing right next to/under a rose bush so it wasn't easy to get at. Probably killed the rose bush in the process too. We'll see.

Bet ya a buck it makes it, they are tough as weeds.

Well Bill, come forward to collect your dollar..lol. Man...I split the trunk, lost most of the roots, and ripped off a good amount of bark while digging it up. But... it's starting to do it's thing. Tough little guys aint they...lol.
