I am anticipating the day this zelcova is ready for a real pot. I would like something that will help emphasize the intersting bends in the trunk.

Any suggestions?

I'm not a big fan of deciduous cascades although if done right I think it can be really nice. The bends in the trunk look awkward and unnatural to me (looks like a bow in the middle section to me). If you plan on keeping it as cascade I'd start with some wiring for more natural bends if possible. It's also pretty long considering how skinny the trunk is, maybe consider shortening it or let it grow as is in ground or larger training pot to help thicken the base, then chop. The nebari looks unorganized to me as well; you've got your hands full! Just my opinion, best of luck :)

Hello Barry.. I think you have an interesting zelkova there.. Even though it is young, it is not without charm. I think what it needs is a different trunk design. Since the tree is so young and long, An intersting trunk line would greatly improve it. Also, a nice thin round pot would make this tree shine.

There is always the option of letting it grow in a grow pot for a few years to thicken the trunk.

I hope you don't mind, but I did some virts.

Rob

Hmmm. I like the trunk and the current planting angle. But what kind of a root tangle have you got in that pot?

I'd look for a shallow, round (or perfectly square) unglazed pot for this one. I suppose a crescent-ish pot would do OK, but I for one don't really like them.

Matter of taste, I guess. I find the kinks in the trunk add interest.

Thanks for the virts. I really like the first one, but I'm not sure I could get the trunk to look like that!
