Putting a Satsuki to work...

Fortunately it's not HARD work...

I was thinking to myself it was a shame no one but me was enjoying the show on my tree this spring... so I took it to work... where somehow in a quick succession of telephone-game-like communication it was volunteered by my director to be on display for the span of a nurses conference at the Hill (4 days).

So she's a working girl now, and quite a hit. I was a little shocked to see they moved her off the display table I had her on... which they promptly used elsewhere to display pamphlets... (height issue apparently). But I am SO going to get my custom table out of there...lol... just waiting for them to go on break.

They know not what they do....

Be sure to notice the crazy 7 lobed flower on the lowest right side of the tree... I get a lot of crazy blooms on this one... but that's the first to look more like an orchid than an azalea.

lol that jin is so controversial for folks. You either love it or you hate it... few are indifferent.

I actually spent several hours sculpting that branch last year... It has a very lovely feel literally and visually (in person). It is an anomily compared to the rest of the tree... but I am also loath to remove it. You take it away and it becomes just another pretty satsuki.

In all honestly what it really needs (and will be done) is extend the dead up and down from that branch so there's more of a marriage between the deadwood and the overall tree. It would also help if I would be willing to break-up that perfect canopy with a dead branch. Not quite there yet... I'm enjoying it too much. So I leave it as it is at the moment.

The tree was hard pruned and leaf stripped last summer after it got back from the US Exhibition. What you see is the response to that process.

I'm not generally one to name a tree... but people keep asking me to with this one... so I am going to call her 'Heiseina' (meaning - serene).

I just got a new beauty last weekend... basal flare and trunk mass to die for... but the crown has not been managed terribly well... so I'm looking forward to working that one over. I'll save the really hard work for next year... this year it'll just get a light pruning and good feeding until we get to know each other. I'll have to post a photo of it. He's very handsome.

Very nice Vic. I like the pot for this one, it looks like it goes well with the shape of the tree. If I were you I would mark that one branch and take cuttings once it pushes growth. This, and by witches brooms, is how cool and interesting varieties are made.

Ensorさん、not trying to sound rude, but to improve on the name I would leave it as just Heisei 平静...If you put the na behind it you are turning it into an adjective to describe something that does not follow...i.e. 平静な木 (Heisei na ki)Serene Tree. Alternatively, I did a scroll recently for a person that named their cabin Serenity Mountain...so we named it 静山　Seizan. Perhaps 静花 Seika (Serene flower(s)) would work as well...just floating ideas for you...

I'm so glad to see your 'working girl' is still looking so lovely one year after her 'coming-out' appearance at the National Exhibition in Rochester,NY. Was gorgeous then and even better now. How fortunate for those you work with. Nice to be able to share her beauty.

I seem to recall that you paint kanji don't you? A better play would be "here's the name... and did you know I can make a scroll for you of the name?".... "these are examples of some of my work"

As a collector of scrolls both made for me and antique... I'd be all over that like a spider monkey hopped up on Mountain Dew.

In fact I have a beautiful old piece which I should have you evaluate for remounting. The cloth is water marked but the image is fine... not sure if it can be cleaned or is best remounted. It's a very sweet image of an elderly couple standing on the shore looking at the waves of the sea. I believe it's been remounted once before, as the bar/cloth is not as old as the image clearly is.

I'll have to send you some photos...
