Almost sure this pot is worth the $6 my daughter paid for it at a local antique mall. It has a chop (hard to read) and interesting drainage holes on the side. I am thinking Chinese but if anyone knows better chime in.

Definitely Chinese. The holes on the side say “orchid pot”. Shape too. They are for those graceful, grassy cymbidiums that are usually grown in tall pots. Some are really elaborate and decorative. The Japanese do them as well, but they just look a little different in style. Neat pot.

Definitely a pot originally designed for Cymbidium orchids. The poem is likely related to Chinese Lunar New year, as a number of the Chinese native Cymbidiums bloom around that time of year and have intense fragrances, considered "good omens" or auspicious for the new year. Raising Cymbidiums is a custom as old as Penjing, Modern Chinese will use these as "cascade pots" for Penjing or Bonsai, so today the design is "dual purpose", bonsai, penjing, or orchid pot.

Nice find! I found a nice semi cascade porcelain pot at an antique store but decided not to buy it as I didn't really have anything to put in it.

As soon as I read holes in side and before seeing picture my mind screamed (or at least affirmed clearly) orchid pot. Painting is Chinese style borrowed from Song Dynasty school of painting.

Thanks all. Appreciate your feedback. I think this pot may have to go back to my daughter who, coincidentally, was just gifted with a nice orchid. They must be destined for each other!
