I came back from Yosemite and found that my trees were suffering a bit from our excessive heat. Seems spider mites have found a home, so now I am spraying with Malathion when I should have been spraying prophylactically.

It surprised me because I have experienced mites on shimpaku before, but never on black pine. Well, I am sure that a weekly spray of Malathion will abate the problem for the season. Does anyone recommmend anything else? Boon tells me the buggers will get resistant if you use only one pesticide.

Me I like Carl's recipe:
Soap, Alcohol, Water, and a few drops of Neem.

I thought that alcohol wasn't a part of the actual recipe, but for you to get over the annoying fact that there are mites in your tree...

Chris,

I use insecticidal soap with reasonable success. Usually takes more than one application, however. In fact I have to hit the little sob's this weekend with a second dose. I use it as I do not like spraying the more potent chemicals with 2 young ones and their friends running around the yard.

No, it's not.... wrote "I thought that alcohol wasn't a part of the actual recipe, but for you to get over the annoying fact that there are mites in your tree..." that's pretty funny!

Regards,

Martin

Chris after drinking the alcohol it's easy to get the little buggers to go somewhere else, all you do is sing them the following song

The ants go marching 1 by 1 Hoorah Hoorah.
The ants go marching 1 by 1 Hoorah Hoorah.
The ants go marching one by one the little one stops to drink some rum.
And they all go marching down into the ground to get out of the rain. Boom Boom Boom.

2x2 -stops to tie his shoe

3x3 -stops to climb a tree

4x4 - this one can have some racy versions;)

On the real side it's probably for evaporation. I think either Behr, or Ak put the soap recipe out there recently, I'm sure there is a good explanation there.

With mites or any buggers, multiple applications are called for. What happens is spray #1 kills 90-95% of the adult population, which is good enough for the results but then the eggs hatch. So a week or two later, another shot. I do this 4 times in a row.

I think I am also going to try the soap recipe.

SAW Recipe

Found the post for the Recipe that I have used for dang near everything.
I did find that the Lemon smelling dish soap works better.
Mom

And yes it is posted at Bonsaitalk as well

CARL’S SOAP SOLUTION!

INGREDIENTS
Water
Dish Detergent
Rubbing Alcohol

DIRECTIONS
Fill a gallon jug with water and add one (1) or two (2) tablespoons of dishwashing detergent and one (1) tablespoon of vegetable oil (or Neem oil). Shake up the gallon jug to mix the ingredients.

Fill this solution from the gallon bottle into a spray bottle and just before using add 1 to 2 two caps full (from the rubbing alcohol bottle) of rubbing alcohol and spray immediately. If you do not use the full bottle of spray, I suggest the next time you are going to use the soap/alcohol solution add the same amount of rubbing alcohol again, since the alcohol will evaporate. I store this soap/oil solution in the gallon jug for months on end. It does not seem to go bad.

Spray on plants covering all leaf and stem surfaces. You may have to spray from three to four times with intervals of three days. I have eliminated almost any kind of pest that has attacked my trees, including scale.

I do not wash off the spray and have seen no adverse reaction to the trees from this mixture.

I have modified Mr. Carl’s recipe somewhat for my purposes and like the results...I use 1 table spoon of dishwashing detergent and 2 to 3 table spoons of 'Garlic Oil'...The addition of garlic makes the recipe even more thorough on insects plus many viral and bacterial pests...I have been using it for several years as a first attempt at controlling pests...

I have used Sevin successfully on everything that has been thrown my way in Oregon. Might add that to the rotation.
