Newly acquired Yatsubusa this spring. I'm excited about this little fat guy.

Thanks Mark. Yes, it is from Brent. You must've recognized that first photo from his website. Got a pine of his coming my way in the fall.

I've been pining :D for one of those elms. They are very nice. Most of my "bonsai money" for the foreseeable future went to remove the raccoon from my attic though :D

Gotta love those unexpected expenses. That couldn't have been fun. Removal and disposal of those creatures from the yard isn't fun....let alone in the house plus whatever destruction and stench it left behind.

Thanks Brian. I just received it the other day but will let it grow untouched this year as it was potted this winter/spring and was cut back for shipping. It's pretty dense right now with growth to see my favorite angles of the trunk so I'll assess things when it goes dormant.

Very nice tree. Brent's got some nice specimen trees on his website now, and he's a class act.

I've got a few cork bark elms in the ground that I'm hoping to grow out to that size. I wonder how tall this tree was pre-chop to get that kind of base. I have one in the ground that has probably slightly more than a 2" base, but the damn thing is about 12' in height

Thanks mike108 and mcpesq817.

I am always very happy with Brent's trees, service, and knowledge. His specimen page does have some jaw-droppers.

I know what you mean regarding height of trees in the ground. My tridents in the ground are about that height but not nearly as big-a-trunk as your elms. I too have some cork bark elms in the ground and I'm sure I'll have to move all my field-grown stuff around as they just get huge before they trunk up to the level we want.

I was within a week of the paycheck that was going to buy either that yatsubusa or the seiju right next to it.

Ok, I'm better.

Excellent buy, can't wait to see how it develops.

Hi Matt,

Two or maybe three years ago, I had a 3/4" caliper trident that was maybe a foot and a half tall. There wasn't much to it, so I put it in the ground. Today, it's about 12' tall, but the base is 4"with a nice spreading base. What I did was cut off all the downward growing roots and planted it on top of a 1'x1' ceramic tile. It probably also helps that it is near the downspout off the gutters on my detached garage and that there is a second trunk about the same height that is about 3" above ground level (which I will use as the next leader since it imparts a lot of movement).

Enjoy your elm - that's a really nice one. :D

Hi Grog,
Yes, I was a bit apprehensive about posting the tree as soon as I did with the notion some might think, "Looky-what-I-got." A lot of people are going to recognize trees that are obtained from highly visible sellers on the internet...Brent, Andy Smith, Muranaka, and often ebay. BUT, these growers/collectors deserve the recognition for all their hard work prior to us passing over payment. Anyway, It's happened to me a number of times where I have been beaten to the punch by someone else with all these sellers and realized the best thing to do is not be compulsive and try for the next best or 3rd best thing but instead remain patient for something even better to come around.

mcpesq817,
Impressive growth! Looks like you are also more fortunate to have a better/longer growing season as well. In '09 I put in a few trident whips and a ridiculous number of amur whips, some over tiles, and it just looks absurd and jungle-like now. Next year, I will cut back, and weed-out the losers and get things under control.

That is a very nice elm. I tried to buy it myself. I ended up settling for one of his corticosa specimens, should be arriving in a day or two. Good for you for buying quality stock.
