(((Disclaimer... Seedlings... Sunburnt seedlings... don’t be alarmed.)))

So in my first year bonsai “fever“, I had started a “wedge” of Pomegranate seeds.. indoors. So they got a little “leggy”..

Then late april early may I placed them outside.. two-stepping, if necessary.

Now I learned MUCH about the sun’s dynamics in relation to “greenstuffs”... in other words I sunburnt, quite severely. (Many good troops were lost)..

Punicas were among these...

Upon being burnt.. their growth ceased, almost entirely.

It was not until this week that I could realistically say that they “bounced”. So today, I decided to “clean up” some of the burnt leaves and do some maintenance pruning on these specimens to clean that sun-burned slate and set them on their way...

They were about 6 months old when the “incident” ocurred.

(Dangit.. rained out.. I did not get to all of them.. but they are coming... the LAST two images are the cuttings i “harvested” from these same plants, at four months old...The rest are “before and after”s)

Whoops! Forgot to post the rest.

This one is my son, Riley’s he has made all decisions on it, thus far.
(I started taking pictures this one AFTER the first cut)

This is one I had pruned hard (real hard) right before the move outside.
So it is developing and reacting to the sunburn differently.

These two were planted ROR even earlier in their life... they got elementally “hit” the hardest.. and were honestly assumed for dead..
(That was until new growth was noticed)

This last one.. just another pom.

(((Update)))

More rooted cuttings... So easy off of semi-hardwood....

There is a lady who buys begonia cuttings from me who runs a little annual greenhouse in town.. mostly just because she likes plants.. she refuses to SELL annuals.. says there’s no money in it and SHE likes to keep her perennials.

Anyways.. she had asked for me to start getting some pomegranate cuttings for her (like 25-30). and asks how much for them....

Uuuuuh no idea!

Anyways.. here’s a couple of them I rooted PRIOR to receiving her “order”.. just to “keep track” Hehe.

Thank you, for your encouraging words, but also for reminding me, I have to do a little maintenance on these guys real soon. ;)
What kind of maintenance you need to do to them??!
Only thing to do is let them grow freely

Just speaking of removing some of the lower growth that would start to cause bulging in ALL the wrong areas. 🤣... nothing major..

They do not look the same anymore :)

I’ll take a pic tomorrow “pre-maintenance” BEFORE I do anything so you can “see” what I am speaking of.

So I lied.. I ended up just performing the “maintenance”.. ;) Not all needed it... this was primarily to discourage inverse taper on the parts of the seedlings which I was going to “use”
(The punicas with ONE image did not require anything)
(It also started raining, again, before I could finish all.)

I normally ALWAYS utilize “trimmings” for cuttings... but success with these trees is nearing 100 percent... and I already have so many that I’m going to start giving them away...

So I guess tea time...02166B04-C9CD-4A15-AAB9-E47C8E8F870B.jpeg

Wow! Haven’t updated these in a while... probably because 5 of them are in my forest contest.. livin’ roots-exposed on a slab ;)

Here’s SOME of them, loosely “set” and ready to go outside (soon((ish)))..I really wish I would’ve taken PRE-work photos.

  1. Nice demonstration of rooting from nodes.
  2. It appears that the response weakens with distance from a leafed node.
  3. It is interesting that first node below your fingers appears to have both leaves and a root --> IOW, you could grow a tree from just one node! Have you heard of Murashige-Skoog?

So ONE cutting could produce (x) amount of actual specimens! I get it!

Dear lord... I though I had too many punicas NOW!
