I purchased this seedling as a Carpinus Coreana, but the leaves look more like Carpinus Turczaninowii to me. Any ideas?

Kill the miserable dishonest seller🔥🏴‍☠️!

Haha! I bought the seedling from someone who wasn’t a bonsai guy. He grew them from seed at an online nursery. Not sure if the seeds mutated, or if he got the wrong seeds...

all the botanical references I've read say NO Difference between C. coreana and C. turczaninowii. They are one and the same species. The names are synonyms. What difference were you expecting? To me that indeed looks like C. coreana. And it looks like C. turczaninowii, because they are the same thing.

Thanks for the input, I thought they were slightly different? The long pointed leaves threw me, I thought KH was more of an oval shape.

Okay, makes sense, now that I know what you are looking for. I believe this is natural variation between individual seedlings and possibly some biogeographical variation depending on where seed was collected. One would have to have a dichotomous botanical key and do a close examination, to be absolutely certain, but just superficially, from your photos, I'd say it was correctly labelled. And depending on which author you look at, it is about 50:50 as to which of the two names gets used. Slight favor to Carpinus coreana because it is easier to remember how to spell.

Once again, I think Leo's right.

Some consider C. turczaninowii as a subspecies of C. coreana, but the matter is yet to be settled among dendrologists.

I believe this is natural variation between individual seedlings and possibly some biogeographical variation depending on where seed was collected.

I tend to share this opinion.

I'd like to also add that different cultivation environments (soil, climate, ferts or not, etc.) can make a big difference on rather young potted trees. Had you asked for ID without mentioning "Ulmus", I might have suggested "Zelkova ?..."

I tried to help my friend in bonsai circle to propagate CARPINUS COREANA from very old seeds he had been trying for long time.
I simply put them in compost outside and let nature do its job.
Here are the results
PS: I do not know if they are really Carpinus coreana as I am completely relying on my friend, he said some friend got him from Korea years ago. He is insisting it is not Carpinus turczaninowii.
Time will tell once they grow up;
Can somebody please tell me the difference in leaves between Turczaninowii and Coreana ? What I heard is Coreana has small leaves compared to Turczaninowii and also Coreana has got shorter internodes.
@cmeg1 : Hi Curtis, any thoughts?

There is no real difference between Korean hornbeam and turczaninowii. It's the same tree. It's known by a few names, including "Rock Hornbeam."
