Many of you have seen this Maple before, this photo is from 2008 but I plan on showing a fall color update later today if it stops raining outside. I purchased this tree as a cut down stump in Chicago in 1993. It was harvested from a defunct nursery. I have had some knowledgeable people tell me they think it is Bene Kawa. I think it is just plain old mountain maple stock salvaged after the scion died.

Vance,

That is a very nice, well proportioned, maple. A very nice rounded canopy. I'm looking forward to seeing the fall wardrobe, but I'd like to see her naked this winter too. You've had her for 18 years so I'm sure a nude shot would be on the up and up.
Looking forward to the pics. Thanks for posting.

Great shape to the canopy. I am waiting for the fall color pics as well.

I am afraid you might be disappointed with the nudes. The tree is not as well ramified as it should be because it has not had the greast attention to detail over the last two seasons due to family obligations and my not being home.

I love the maple. I am not as much of a fan of the maple/pot combo. I would usually put a tree like this in a smooth oval glazed pot. Just a consideration next time you repot :)

I get mixed reaction from the pot, some really like it, others think it needs something else. Truth is I have not as yet been able to find something that really floats my boat but the one it's in will do for now. I love your virtual by the way. Thank you for taking the time to throw it together, I know what an effort this kind of thing can be. By the way; I do like your idea and think it worth seriously considering.

I needed to edit out the grass mat :) I was looking for a glaze that would look nice with the dark green summer leaves as well as the red for the fall. Use the pot I have in the virtual on a dark stand with reddish wood when the tree is in fall foliage, and you'll have a knock-out! :)

BTW... the pot I chose makes your tree look a lot bigger, doesn't it? :)

I have a question for you: How do you embed the photos like you do? I know some people do this kind of thing all of the time but I am clueless.

Like the maple Vance, can you defoliate for the needed ramification, or do you have to cut back and regrow/pinch.

Nice job with the pot Bnut.

It all depends where the image is hosted (and who pays the cost of the bandwidth).

On BonsaiNut, when you click the image icon, you can upload an image from one of two places (1) your computer or (2) an external host (like your own personal web space, or another web site). If you chose (1) your image will be uploaded to BonsaiNut and will be HOSTED by BonsaiNut - so it will appear as a thumbnail in your posts and only get enlarged if someone clicks on it. If you choose (2) you have a choice of uploading your image to BonsaiNut (in which case it is treated as an attachment just as in (1)) OR you can choose to continue to host the image yourself and LINK the image to BonsaiNut in which case you can display a big image in your post for everyone to see.

In my personal case, I have tons of web space so I upload images to a storage folder and then link them over to the BonsaiNut web site - but they are not being HOSTED by BonsaiNut, so I can make them as large as I want (relatively speaking - I do have a cap on the site in terms of max image size). It really comes down to cost - a few thousand photos isn't that bad, but when you are talking a million (or millions) your bandwidth costs rise exponentially, so you wouldn't want all those photos to be constantly viewed in max size if people would only normally click on a few of them.

Defoliating would be the best way to do this but for the last several years I have not been able to hit the right window due to obligations that took me away from the tree when this should have been done.

Thought so, and understand, timing can be everything.

Probably a good thing, this year anyway. Our climate is probably a little more unpredictable than most. This summer was very hot and very dry, then it got very cool and very wet. If I had defoliated I would have most likely lost the tree or stressed it out back a couple of years. Understanding I have not been home during July for a couple of years the rest is a less than productive history. Here in Michigan defoliation should take place in July.

I think you got more rain then we did here, but ya it got wet, most of the D trees around here are at peak fall color, along with fungus stains, almost all the leaves were mottled by some kind of fungus

That is a beautiful maple. I have always wanted to try one, just never have found anything that I liked which I could afford. I too would love to see it in fall color.

I hope to get a couple of shots of it today. The weather has not been to cooperative lately.

Hey Vance, did you ever get any fall pictures of this one?

Not from this year. When the weather had cleared up enough I could take a close look at it I realized that with all the rain and then the hot and then the rain and the hot again There was a lot of damage to the leaves making a first class picture not possible. I could put up some from a year or two ago if you wish?

Sure if you don't mind. I was just going through the posts and had forgotten about this one. I like it.

I have a couple. The first is from 2005-6, The second is the Spring growth from 2006 or7 and the third is a year or two after it was placed in one of my planters for growing out 1995.
