Since we're posting dog threads (I warned you) here are some photos of one of my dogs (named Rocket) taking me on a 10 mile mountain bike ride in Cleveland National Forest. This trail is about 15 miles from my house... does it look like Southern California to you?

Take it from a guy who grew up in Illinois - nothing like it there, either :) I'll bet 99% of the 3 million people who live in Orange County don't even know what it's like back there. There's even a wilderness area where they don't allow bikes - only foot traffic or horses.

Awesome looking dog bnut
I had a border collie/aussie mix (more border collie) some years back. I'd take him out on my mountain bike to get rid of some of his energy, and when I got back home I'd no sooner put my bike down and he was throwing his tennis ball at me to play catch.

Absolutely! My first border collie I had when I was a little younger and she would go out with me when I was training for a marathon. 10 miles, 15 miles, 20 miles... I'd run out 10 miles, then throw a tennis ball BACKWARDS as I was running so she had to run back, get it, and run to catch up to me :)

Rocket is awesome. When he goes bike-riding with me I have him trained so he leads on the uphills and follows on the downhills. He also runs with me on Fridays when I do short 5 milers on the ridgeline with a friend. My friend LOVES running with the dog - he always comments "you have your own workout partner right here!" Rocket ignores EVERYONE and EVERYTHING but the run. Dogs, people, rabbits, squirrels... it doesn't matter. If he is running he is always 20 feet in front of me - no distractions allowed :)

My other dog (currently) is an Aussie, but she is more in it for the food :) A GREAT family dog, but I think I would have to be a hot dog for her to TRULY love me :)

Your telling Me... :( its near impossible for a guy to find a decent place to do any remotely intermediate mountain biking without making a trip to Wisconsin.

Let me know when you're in Southern California. You don't even need to bring your bike! I'll hook you up!

Hey Bnut, we're doing a backpacking trip to SoCal this January, we try to stay away from going to Big Bend every year, and AZ has had such dry weather we were concerned about water there. You ever go to the wilderness or BLM areas around Mohave? Right now we're planning on the Old woman, Turtle and maybe stepladders, as well as a side to Mohave. Got any faves? This is our first time in the area.

This is Abby (RIP) She trained for many ultramarathons with me often 30 - 40 mile long runs and ready to round up the sheep when we got home.

I have never been that far East. I am more familiar with the Western sections around Joshua Tree (which is half in the Mojave and half in the Sonoran deserts). I go tent camping in Joshua Tree at least two weekends a year and do some rock scrambling, hiking, etc. Due to it being a National Park, it isn't a particularly dog-friendly place :)

If you DO go make sure you post photos! I am always looking for new places to escape to!

Beutiful dog mr nut. I too take my dog cycling she is border collie whippet cross and she's fast for a whippet and has the border collies stamina. Cycling is the only way to exerscise her properly she runs circles round me though even down hill. Last week i got a speedo for my bike i was doing 42 miles an hour and she was still running large rings around me. Also cycling is the only thing i can do that distracts her from chasing most living things other than the various livestock she has been trained to leave. When she's not out running she watches the children with a ferocious passion god help any stranger who comes to close to my kids without me passing it first.

I keep Rocket under pretty tight obedience. I trained him from a very young pup and he is really biddable. He doesn't chase a THING unless I tell him to. We have been running and a rabbit will run almost across his front paws and he doesn't even turn his head... UNLESS I point to the rabbit and say "get it!". I really like that he also ignores other dogs - particularly if we are passing another dog on the trail and the other dog is on a leash barking and snarling. Rocket will run right around him without even looking.

He's fast, but nowhere near as fast as our first Border Collie (a girl). Nor can he run 42 miles per hour! (I rarely bike that fast myself :) ) But he can run and run and run. I had to train him to run behind me on the downhills because he was always looking back over his shoulder and I was afraid I was going to run him over. He's a good chaser though.

We are probably going to breed him this spring. I am talking to a couple of breeders about it. He is American Border Collie registered (the US working dog line, NOT AKC) and I need pre-approval from his original breeder before we can have any pups.
