Hi all,
There are quite a few of people contacted me to ask how I could grow bonsai successfully in my hot and dry climate. I decide to write a small thesis with tittle "Evaluation of Stress on Bonsai". I have tried to google to see there was any article regarding to this issue, but there was none. So, I think I will be the first one to jump into this problem. With my 14 year experience, I have learnt from my and others' mistakes. In my opinion, learning from the mistake is the best way to study, but from others' mistakes is way better 😆

I created these formulas which help me a lot in daily activities. I hope it will help whoever is new to bonsai hobby. Thanks.

This is brilliant Thu Thoai! Im a scientist by training and profession. This kind of scoring system makes it easier to quickly evaluate what is allowed to be performed to a tree and under what circumstances. Nicely done!

If I may offer a constructive criticism - Your scoring system is for the sole purpose of evaluating what can be done for the survival and the continued health of the tree. Or at least that is what it seems to me. Is it possible to incorporate positive points for a favorable outcome? For example, pruning a branch resulting in two branches could be a mild stressor that is actually beneficial from a bonsai perspective. Also, have a root bound tree is not always a negative thing as in case of flowering bonsai. My point is - taken from a horticultural perspective, pruning a branch is a negative stress but from a bonsai perspective, pruning a branch can be positive. I was wondering incorporating both positive and negative points in such mild stress situation would be beneficial.

Awesome job nevertheless!

Thanks Hbhaska for your kind words and suggestion. Like you said, I made these systems to aim for general health of the trees. With you’re suggestion, it is more local issues to which we may approach slightly difference. Let me see if I can create more details . Again, thank you very much for your thought.

Excellent write up, bonhe. Seems like a reasonable way to approach work in this climate.

Kale, it's a PDF file, should open with Acrobat Reader on your iPhone with no issues.

There have actually been books written on stress in plants as well as being discussed pretty much any discussion, book or class on plant physiology.
Also not sure what you googled, but I found lots of articles online

I just checked and found out the reason I did not see the book you gave the link is that I googled with “ stress evaluation >< bonsai”, “ stress level >< bonsai” . Anyway, my thesis is specifically for bonsai, not for tree generally! Thank you for your information.

Whether it is a bonsai or a full sized tree in the forest, tree physiology works the same. A bonsai is still a tree and their biology isnt changed because they are in a pot.
Therefore, knowledge on tree physiology will very much apply.
