A couple months ago while looking for something on Amazon, I came across this mini pottery wheel. Despite the reviews of it being under powered I thought it could be usable to make mame pots. So yesterday I finally had some free time to really try it out.

At the end of my testing of the unit I was able to produce this mame pot. I also burnished the pot once the clay became leather hard. But I can attest that this little pottery wheel will make a huge mess. With no splash guard, once water gets on the pot it whips the water in all directions. It was also a bit challenging to center the pot to trim it up some. Also the motor is extremely underpowered, this made it difficult to do anything with the clay. The moment my finger touched the clay it would stop moving, and if my fingers were wet it would whip water all over the place. But overall I think this pot came out fairly nice for the first time using this mini pottery wheel. I'll probably make another this weekend and post some more pics. Now I just have to get my kiln up and running.

cool. your description reminded me of a marketing opportunity for someone
Just giving a heads up that the mini pottery wheel is really not that great. The reviews on amazon was true to word........ basically junk, lol.

I still got it anyways with the intentions of swapping the motor and adding a splash pan. I've still not been able to find a motor small enough with the correct RPM and enough torque to improve it. I've found a pan that might work with the wheel head.

Cool little pot! I like it, wouldn't mind having a few of those for my little shelf
The little pots are pretty cool to make. Instead of using your hands, you're using your fingers. The clay that I'm using has a lot of grog in it, it would leave scratches across the surface.

I really wish I had a tabletop testing kiln. It would make it a lot easier to fire these little pots.

Here's one I just finished up a bit more classical. It has good weight to it, but the clay has about 11% shrinkage after firing. So final size will be different from what you see here. I have a small Japanese crab apple that would look good in this pot. Looking forward to firing this one for sure.

Thanks!

The belt to my wood lathe broke. I'm waiting on a new one to come in. As soon as I can get my lathe running I plan to make some plugs to make molds. Then I can repeat pots that would be a bit more intricate.
