i took a jm cutting last year it took root fine came off a garnet maple that was grafted. it was a branch little over 1/8 dia and all year it looked like a std green jm 5 pointed leaf. took root fine the buds started popping this year about a week ago one leaf has 5 points like last year the rest look like a green laceleaf variety 7 points. i know this branch wasnt grafted cause it was right at groung level on the trunk stock. whats going on with it?

here is a pic
If you wait for the upload icon and maybe downsize to large pics should work. I find I do better at large than actual even on iPhone. No one complains about quality just that I forget to rotate sometimes!

Please take pictures down-sun. Some of us have limited vision and don't see well in the dark.

Sometimes newer leaves can be “deformed” by fungal infection.

There are a ton of common, easily dealt with/or relatively harmless fungi that looove Acer “blood” :)

I, also, cannot really see the picture that well..

I can see the differentiation you speak of.

I’m still mostly clueless.. 🤔

I feel it possibly useful pointing out that the differences COULD be in maturity alone, as I have experienced similar changes on other Acer, during forced secondary “flush”.. like post-defoliation..

I DO see what you mean... just still lack the precise expertise to help you “label” exactly what is happening, beyond saying, “I’ve seen similar things happen.”

🤓
