Okay, I got this JBP from Pieter van Uden (Holland Bonsai) because I made a slab for him 2 years ago. I am a bit curious what you would do with the character branch? and where you would build the new top?158500585_2496781243792513_5507860114528319449_n.jpg. Of course I already have an idea myself, but I always like to hear other options.

Outside of maybe a broad, little, upward arc in the long reach, I wouldn't change a thing.

It looks like last year’s growth is standing straight up. To build pads and develop ramification, you need to update the wiring, and lay those shoots down. This will open up the canopy so that sunlight can get into the center and stimulate backbudding, and keep whatever small shoots you have in there alive.

A lot of “what to do next” depends on how big you want the tree to be.

If you want a bigger tree, don’t decandle, move it into a bigger pot and/or a grow box.

That pot, by the way, is not a good choice. The tree is potted off center, and even then, on the wrong side. An oval or a rectangle would be better, and placed so that the trunk is more to the left.

Thank you Adair, maybe I should have told you I just repotted it. choice of pot and where exactly it should be, does not really matter to me at this point. I am already glad that it is out of the old plastic pot and not fine soil.

Good idea, shall I first see if it survived the repotting?
Always listen to the tree. If it responds to the re-pot and grows well, then you might be able to de-candle late spring then wire the new foliage this fall. If not, then hopefully you can do it next year.
