Stupid Deadwood question

As said in the title this is a probably a stupid question... on shari particularly on older trees the deadwood grows out away from the trunk and looks almost flat like a cobras hood. My question is does new wood continue to grow under the dead wood and pushes the shari out?

Dead is dead homie. The ribbon like look could be carved that way....could be natural....

No. Quite the opposite in my limited experience. Healthy growth and thickening of the plant will somewhat diminish the shari and other deadwood.

Nope. It is the living bark under which growth takes place. By continuously working back the edges of the bark (creating more deadwood) the ribbon comes into existence, as the living part grows away frmo the dead parts.
