Acquired this little tree from nursery stock last year. I don't know the cultivar, the foliage does ressemble a Shim, but that is not important to me. It has faired well and I post an update.

In years to come the apex will be re-directed towards the right and work will be carried out on the jins. The buttress is developing nicely.

Rick,
From the photo, I would guess shimpaku, too. Nice work so far. How tall is this tree?

The tree is about 8 inches from the soil level. This tree is probably one that is the furthest along development wise. The current shape was developed during initial styling, as the "shrub" held then what we see here today. The buttress is developing nicely and if all continues do go well in the next couple of seasons, it will be transfered to a suitable pot.

Your stone seems a bit regular and hides the nebari. If it were to one side and more natural looking, it might say something! ;)

That's not a stone Chris, it's a pot marker, for sun rotation purposes, all my pots have one in them. The marker starts off facing east, then the tree is rotated weekly. It makes for easy remembering and you immediatly know if a tree has been replace in the proper position on the bench:)

Pretty good idea, although I knew it was not a stone and was "being facetious."

I sink a odd colored stone in mine (just below surface and not noticed to the casual observer).
