There are some box woods around my house that need to be taken out and I would like to try to bonsai some. Is there a way to cut a big stem from the original plant and have already have a nice big start of a bonsai trunk?

Are you talking about making your bonsai out of the piece you cut off or digging up the base of the trunk?

I don't feel like the skin and bark of boxwood lends itself well to cuttings or layers.

I'd try the whole plants.

From my limited experience in my very humid zone boxwood cuttings take rather easily. Keep it out of wind and direct sunlight. Keep it moist. Take several to improve your chances

Do not think that is going to happen in Utah. Especially in the summer heat. Not sure what time frame you have but if you wait for spring you can cut them down and then dig up the stump and put it in a training pot. If you can wait you could possibly air layer it (I have no experience with boxwood airlayer) Either way I think you would be more successful if you wait.

So from the sounds of it, seems like taking a cut piece most likely will not work then.

Instead of trying to take a big cutting which will likely fail why not dig it up, put it in a big nursery pot and then later on cut it down to size? I dug a pair from my yard last September treating them that way and they are pushing lots of new growth this summer. Eventually I will remove some of the many stems leaving the bigger ones for bonsai development.
