I went to my local nursery yesterday to look for some interesting Japanese Maple cultivars for propagation and I picked up this decent size Japanese Maple 'Katsura'.

Katsura is a really cool cultivar that leafs out a golden yellow in the spring before turning a cool green in the summer. It's got a small leaf size too which makes it a good candidate for Bonsai.

I plan on container growing this tree as a garden tree not as Bonsai, but I will use it as a mother plant for air layers and cuttings that will be trained for bonsai.

I've already Identified some branches that will be good bonsai prospects and I have pruned some shoots that I will be starting as cuttings.

That’s a beautiful tree as is! Has a nice form and already looks like a miniature mature tree like you’d see in nature. That will make a nice yard tree. Why not plant it? It’ll grow quicker and you can get larger layers in the future from it.

I currently live in a townhome so planting isn't a good option for me lol. My wife and I bought the house last year and we figured a townhome would be a good choice for our first house but It's not really the best choice for gardening and bonsai. I'm hoping to buy something with some more land in a few years and then it will definitely be a landscape garden tree!
