brilliant! you airlayered a stick and stuck it in a 'bonsai' pot:p
buried it a bit, shes half an inch thick or so lol
happy with it and shes repot with radial roots, day 2 of new life, yeww

thats in a 9" pot, id have used a 6" but ran out (and ordered 60 more last evening, 6.4"ers)

next steps, how will you train it to be a bonsai? when most get these types of trees, theyre told to chop to first branch, is that your thinking going forward? it would be the only way to get some movement into a ramrod straight section of trunk.

yeah, could be. it has some taper buried a bit more but will most likely let it take on some strength, fill out roots, make a few small cuts on all branches next year to push some growth underneath. see what im working with in a couple years and then bring a hardcut down to a single branch if i dont like the trunk line at that point (taper) and cant work with hardcutting branches

yeah here it is, im repotting this into a massive planter and going to continue airlayers on it in the future
and perhaps a second patio maple out back once i get a pergola or shade cloth setup

Personally, I'd work toward a variety with closer internodes.

I'll keep an eye for something else down the rd. I remember hearing from someone on here the traditional green Acer is one of better choices for bonsai maples too so I'm stoked on it

They stay outside against garage or in breezeway or in the cold garage for smaller potted ones. I'll garage this one. It grew well but I don't think enough roots for me to riskit outsode
