Bite impression in cut paste

I found something similar on 2 different blobs of paste this past season.
One tree’s cut paste looked like small birds had landed on the top of the trunk and dug their claws into the paste
On the other tree it seemed slugs were eating some of the cut paste every night, it had clearly defined little slug-sized gnaw marks on it 😮

Yours looks like it may have been a small bird?

Could be a woodpecker testing to see if that dark stuff on the tree was rot. Rotten wood is a home for grubs and insects woodpeckers eat...

I think a woodpecker makes a lot of sense. Especially that one hole that is out of alignment, but the rest look a hell of a lot like teeth.
