I collected this little seedling of Malus angustifolia this past spring. It looked pretty rough for a while but now it’s pushing new growth and I’ve decided to make it my candidate for this challenge. Hopefully y’all will get to see some flowers by the time the challenge is over. Will post updates sporadically.

Here is a picture of the flowers (taken from the Florida Native Plant Society). I think they are quite beautiful, with a delicate spoon-shape and light pink color. They also smell divine, so all the more reason to grow one.

That appears to be some rust on there, no?

I started a handful of different malus this year.. when I noticed rust, I “removed” the effected trees (straw for ashes).. and treated the rest with NEEM... NEEM works well, if you know how to use it.. and truly follow-through... the only problem is.. that you must remove all effected leaves... or the issue will persist. This can prove difficult with younger plants.

Rust (If that’s what you have) is quite common, but VERY serious.

There is much good material about control.

🤓

I love Augustifolia.. reeeally cool trees!

So this is my first time raising Malus and I am not too experienced with their diseases, but I did neglect this tree a bit during the height of summer and it got underwatered. The leaves crisped up a bit but now it's well watered and pushing new growth. Or at least that is what I think. Does rust usually show on new leaves?

I'll probably spray with neem anyways just to make sure.

I’m not reeeeally seeing any on those top leaf sets... but everyone else-down seems, to me, to be affected by Rust.

Typical treatment of Rust and other fungal ailments require to remove ENTIRE leaves which are showing symptoms. This is problematic in fall.. not necessarily fatal.. especially considering your winters are pretty mild.

Because either WAY... leaves with orangey-red get burned.. seriously.. like... don’t let them ANY WHERE NEAR your other plants... BURN THEM! 🤣🤣
