After good advice from fellow members here I've finally kicked my bad habit of buying cheap and poor material from Home Depot! Here in Eastern PA I've found a place called Edge of the Woods nursery which, after making friends with the owner/manager, will allow me to buy as much "not for sale yet" stock as I want. I picked up a small Oak, pics to come, which had been gnawed on by a rabbit. Price: free! The owner has lots of bonsai 'clients' to whom he gives special treatment. Looks like I found myself a great friend and a perfect place to start collecting from :)

Congrats. Nice that they focus on native plants too.

If you're going to step up on quality and price, native tree/climate is the way to go.

Good point. I figured why bother fighting with non-native species as a beginner? I would prefer not to lose trees to environmental changes if I had done everything else perfectly. Once I'm good at caring for native species I can consider caring for trees which require special treatment

We got a pretty good nursery where I am. Actually 3 of the same nursery in different parts of the area. If I want an oak, I got at least 10 choices from 3 different places

Pretty much all zone appropriate too. They’re my go to place. Much better stuff than Home Depot or Lowe’s

Good luck! I picked everything already 😉… that’s my go to non bonsai nursery. Brandon is great , very knowledgeable and is helping me with some projects I’m working on in the coming months, maybe I’ll run into you some time there. Also when do you plan to visit Kifu Bonsai?

Oh damn, I’ve been going there for years. I never mentioned bonsai. But I definitely will now.

I didn't even know I had so many fellow Bonsai Nuts in my area! If you plan to visit there again in the next few months definitely shoot me a PM, maybe I can swing by and say hello! I completely forgot about Kifu - I really want to get a private lesson this spring and bring my Pyracantha to get advice on the future plan of the tree. Does that place sell pre-bonsai?

Hell yea! Brandon showed me around the staff-only areas where they keep young trees and their propagation material. I'm going back and forth on buying an Ilex that they have back there but I just don't want to take on any more young trees right now

I’ll probably be at Edge of the woods Saturday to pick up one last tree.

Yes... pictures!

For documentation purposes..

Ah yes, what I meant to convey was that I don't have pics of them yet but I'm definitely going to snap a photo for documentation. All my other trees have their 'progress pics' taken!

Thanks for the heads up! If I'm lucky, I'll make it up there one Saturday coming up!! And yes, there are quite a handful of Nutters in your area. Some of us just don't post much... I look forward to seeing what you picked up
