I think I already know the answer to this, but I've been growing this bougainvillea out like crazy with no pruning and realized I forgot it amongst all my other plants on trimming it back in summer.

Is it too late to prune hard?

My need to prune is I'm worried I won't have space for it when I bring the tropicals inside. It has one branch that is over 3ft long.

If you're going to bring it inside, prune it then.
Like @hinmo24t, I also usually work on my tropical trees when the seasons change.
I defoliate, cut back and wire, if needed.
Usually they'll drop their leaves anyway when you move from outdoors to indoors.....and vice-versa.

Thanks for the replies!

Went ahead and trimmed it up and now it looks like a plant again. That one branch was closer to 4ft.
Took some cuttings cause figured why not.
