Hey all, I was gifted this tree and have no idea what it is. Maybe hawthorn? but leaf is not quite right, no thorns either. Not texas ebony or pepper. The leaf is very distinct. Does anyone know what it is so that I can figure out how to care for it

Not sure what it is, there are so many tropical and sub tropical plants with compound leaves. It is a bit like Opercularia decaryi, but something isn't right. Any chance the gifter might know what it is?
Are you really zone 4? You better prepare for indoor cultivation now. Assume it is tropical and keep it above 50 degrees.
Down side, so sorry to say, is that those wire marks are hideous and I dobut it will ever go away. Just keep it healthy through the winter and decide in the spring if you want to layer it or what else you might do.

Gifter did not know what it was. my zone is 5a (corrected it , thank you) A bit like Opercularia decaryi, but leaf not right. Yes the wire marks are sad , but its a rescue so bear the marks thereof
