I started this plant from seed 3-4 years ago and somewhere in the shuffle of it all I lost track of what it is. Plant ID apps have been all over the place so I simply have no clue what it is.

Look like Lilac?
Was my first thought as well.
One of the apps said that, too. I didn't think it was because I live in So Cal and have always heard lilacs don't grow here, so I didn't even realize I had at one point bought lilac seeds. After searching through my receipts today I discovered that I apparently did plant some in 2017. Any suggestions on how to train it?

I have a small one in a small pot. It seems OK, but I'm not sure if it has a second flush or not. I'm keeping it small and if I'm lucky will have a single flower one day. Nobody pays attention to the species because Korean Lilac is so well behaved as bonsai. They don't really have a second flush, but deadheaded immediately after the flowers pass the perfect stage have manageable growth.

This has opposite leaves. Does Lilac? Picture of leaf buds might tell. Leaves seem too pointed for Lilac.

Leafs look like Liliac (Syringa vulgaris) and also the bark color, but the internodal spacing seems too tight.
Maybe a different Syringa or varietal? Lilac = my favorite flowering tree.

Meaning to me that the plant is receiving proper training for bonsai. And it could well be a more compact variety or species on Syringa.

Growing seasons around the world vary widely and it is difficult to get a perspective on what someone says when we don't know where in the world they are. If you go to the upper right hand corner and click on your Icon, you can add your location and people will be able to customize advice for you, and you might connect with another local.

I'd like to see the buds on a branch with no leaves

<<<<< It will show here.

No. You can't ID something that is the size of postage stamp. Next time format to 5" high @116 dpi and "Insert Image" (drag & drop).

clear as mud, but a Lilac anyway.
