Curious on everyone’s thoughts on this. Found this at a local nursery. Is it too straight?

Here’s the top. Lead branch does have a snag in the bark. Looks like it got some collateral damage from when it was chopped.

That could the start of a beautiful broom. I love Korean HBs.
You'd probably need to remove the big branch, and all the low shoots. Decide your trunk height and start a new branch structure. So realistically you're looking at 4-5 years before it looks reasonable and 8-10 years to look good.
I would though, if the price is right.

Also, work on carving that trunk chop this winter.. the sooner you do it the sooner it will heal over.

Price is 200$. I’m not super familiar with what good prices are.

Decent price, especially if you have the patience to grow out another section or two of trunk; both to heal that chop scar and to create some taper/movement.
I went ahead and pulled the trigger, drove 2 hours to this nursery. Very excited for the future of this one! Early Xmas gift to myself

Looks like a fun project! It does have nice basal flare and it appears to be in good health. Cool stuff :)

Maruyama Bonsai Nursery in Sacramento. They have a pretty big selection of Korean Hornbeam. They have a lot of small sized ones and also some medium to large ones. 1640501388516.jpeg1640501670742.jpeg
I'm Bay area based and curious as well.
What nursery?

Currently contemplating these chops/fronts to develop. Wanted to see what everyone else’s opinion was. Blue lines are the root structure that is there underneath the soil.

With option 5 and using the big branch as the new leader, I’m guessing I would have to reduce it to see if I get any back buds before chopping the trunk?

Big side branch gets cut off in every design except for the one where it would become the next section of the trunk.
